Advocating for Human Rights in Yemen: Justice4Yemen Coalition at UPR 🌍 We are at Musaala For Human Rights, honored to present a Joint UPR Statement as part of the Justice4Yemen Coalition, supported by the DT Institute during this week's UPR cycle in Geneva. We addressed critical human rights issues, focusing on ongoing conflict, detentions, forced disappearances, and their impact on civilians. Our evaluation builds on the previous UPR cycle, with a focus on children’s rights, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture. How can you claim your rights if you don't know what they are? Even after trying to get information about Rights, 35% of our 20.000 respondents told us they were unable to get it. Only 24% were successful in getting information! Maybe even more worrying.. 41% of the respondents said they were not interested in their rights or they were unaware that they had rights.. We discussed these results with UHRC Uganda Human Rights Commission representatives during radio talk shows across Uganda to shed light on these challenges and explore solutions. 📊 Poll Results: • 35% tried to get information but failed. • 29% were unaware they had rights. • 24% succeeded in getting information. • 12% were not interested in information about their rights. These findings highlight a significant gap in human rights awareness and access to information. It is crucial for government bodies like the UHRC, which are constitutionally responsible for informing citizens about their rights, to enhance their outreach and educational efforts. Despite the severity of this crime, the perpetrator received only a 25-year sentence and is now appealing and is being entertained by the Ethiopian authorities. This injustice highlights severe flaws in Ethiopia’s legal system and demands immediate global action. I urge global leaders and international community to; 1. Demand a Just Sentence: Push for a review of Heaven’s case to ensure the perpetrator receives an appropriate sentence reflecting his heinous crime. Oppose his appeal and demand real justice. 2. Support Heaven’s Family: Provide necessary resources and advocacy to Heaven’s family during this tragic time. 3. Engage Ethiopian Authorities: Urge Ethiopian officials to address legal system deficiencies and implement reforms to protect children and ensure justice. 4. Raise Global Awareness: Use your influnce to spotlight this case and mobilize international support to pressure Ethiopian authorities. Our children’s safety and justice are at stake. Immediate action is needed to ensure Heaven’s death leads to meaningful change.

Amnesty International (also referred to as Amnesty or AI) is an international non-governmental organisation focused on human rights, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. The organization says it has more than ten million members and supporters around the world.[1] The stated mission of the organization is to campaign for "a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments."[3] The organization has played a notable role on human rights issues due to its frequent citation in media and by world leaders. Amnesty International primarily targets governments, but also reports on non-governmental bodies and private individuals ("non-state actors"). 📢Civic Space alert 📢 NGOs working on human & minority rights, watchdogs (anti-corruption & investigative journalism) and on environment are particularly stigmatized by public authorities and high ranking politicians, finds the study by the Expert Council on NGO Law covering 31 Member States of the Council of Europe Forms of stigmatisation reported in the survey include legislative measures, inadequate legal protection, media smear campaigns, physical attacks against leadership and members of NGOs, limited access to public funds, and exclusion from decision-making. One notable method used against NGOs is abuse of court proceedings, including strategic lawsuits against public participation (so-called SLAPPs). A trend of long-term stigmatisation in several countries, despite a “robust monitoring mechanism” put into place by both the Council of Europe and the European Union, is “particularly concerning,” according to the study, which calls for more “robust engagement and coordinated efforts” to counter the trend. #CivicSpace #HumanRights #Democracy #RuleofLaw #NGOs #CivilSociety https://lnkd.in/eWddPPt7

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International claim to be independent, but they have a revolving door with the US government, and serve its foreign-policy interests, with funding from CIA-linked foundations and billionaire oligarchs. The human rights industry often portrays itself as independent from the US government, but in reality the nonprofit-industrial complex is closely tied to Washington. Even the use of the term “non-governmental organization” (NGO) is misleading, because many so-called NGOs not only collaborate with Western governments, but are often directly funded by them. https://lnkd.in/dqQCUSkm
