🔴 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 = 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚. Is this the future of sports broadcasting? ➡ ESPN's Mbappe Cam. On paper, it all seemed perfect: 🔴 ESPN decided that Kylian Mbappe's #LaLiga 🇪🇸 debut - an event set to mark a new era at Real Madrid - deserved exceptional media coverage. A dedicated camera, dubbed the "𝐌𝐛𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐦", would #broadcast 𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐄 the player's every move: from warm-up, to entrance, the game and his walk off the pitch. Watch the video 🎥 Isolated player cameras have been used before to track a specific player throughout a match (Zinedine Zidane), but offering it as an alternative live stream is a whole new ball game. ❌ or ☑? Will a disappointing debut for the player also spell the end of the Mbappe Cam on ESPN+? Viewership numbers will decide. ❌ Personally, I'm not buying it. I'm not a fan of live ⚽ match broadcasts that focus solely on one player, even if they're destined to be the GOAT. Post-match footage, highlights and edits are a different story. But focusing a team sport broadcast on one individual and making it a separate entity? I like new things, but I'm probably too much of a boomer for this.

Will The Premier League follow the lead of LaLiga, Bundesliga or the NFL when it comes to their approach to media production? The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga has followed their 'glass to glass' strategy from some time, which aids their rights sales - particularly for the broadcasters and platforms who may not have the resources available to create their own production on top of the live feed or broadcast. It makes investing into their live rights a much easier option to get up and running without any major internal investments. That is hugely attractive to big tech companies or platforms servicing markets of limited scale, or event to those who are just cost focus. It's one of the reasons you see how successful the Bundesliga has been in securing a strong global presence for its live rights vs its other european competitors. Listen into this week's StreamTime Sports where we talk about their strategy as well as some of the other competitors who may act as a good example to follow: https://lnkd.in/duH9s8nZ

The Varsity * The NBA is continuing to talk with Warner Bros. Discovery and NBC, but negotiations are not far enough along yet for the league to start conversations around WBD’s all-important matching rights. NBC and the NBA would have to be close to a signed deal for negotiations over those matching rights to truly commence. * Comcast and Diamond have barely spoken in the nine days since the cable operator dropped all of the Bally Sports Networks from its Xfinity cable systems. Both sides are entrenched in their positions, and it doesn't look like any deal is close. * CBS Sports’s deal with the Italian soccer league Serie A expires in a couple of weeks and the two sides are not close on a renewal. The Italian soccer league will either have to accept a much lower rights fee from CBS or find a new partner in the U.S. market. * Former Turner Sports president Lenny Daniels was considered one of the early favorites to replace Norby Williamson, but now has become a much longer shop as ESPN is not moving off its desire that the role will be based in Bristol, Conn. * Streaming, Paramount, women's sports, Spulu and sports betting were the top topics on the minds of NFL lawyers who gathered in Washington, D.C. this week. I spoke to the group on Wednesday morning about the changing media landscape, and these were the focus of most of the questions I fielded. * It looks like Netflix will wind up carrying the two NFL games scheduled for December 25, per a bevy of sources. It’s a first-of-its-kind deal, and almost certainly not the last. https://lnkd.in/eQN-tqcj

For more than a decade, countless sports-production leaders have opined about the need to make live broadcasts look more like video games to attract a broader audience. Tuesday night, TNT Sports U.S. is making that vision a literal reality. In collaboration with NBA 2K and Genius Sports, TNT Sports will offer the first of four immersive NBA 2K25 DataCast presentations on truTV and Max during the 2024 Emirates National Basketball Association (NBA) Cup Quarterfinals and Semifinals. “We are conscious of the fact that many fans today have experienced sports through videogames first and are used to watching the game from that perspective,” says Matt Mosteller, VP, Content, TNT Sports. “We’re excited for fans to be able to experience the NBA Cup through this NBA 2K lens. Many fans who have grown up playing NBA 2K will be able to see it come to life in the real game.” 🏀 : https://lnkd.in/erC3vGDj
