New research led by UCL reveals that a new treatment regime for cervical cancer can reduce the risk of death by 40%, offering hope to thousands of women and people with a cervix. However, this advancement alone won’t ensure equal benefits for all. Cancer Research UK (CRUK) highlights that cervical cancer mortality is higher in deprived areas, where screening uptake is also lower, particularly among some ethnic minority groups. Alongside developing effective treatments, prioritising equitable prevention is critical to ensure no one is left behind. 🌍 Cancer Burden in LMICs: A Growing Crisis 📈 In 2012, 65% of all cancer deaths globally occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This alarming figure is projected to rise to 75% by 2030. Due to the lack of reliable cancer registries and reporting systems, the true burden of cancer in LMICs might be even higher. Let's work together to improve cancer care and reporting in LMICs. Barriers to access in healthcare continue to increase the gap between lifesaving interventions and the unmet need of millions of people, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In this white paper, my colleague Temis Vasili and I look into the state of play of oncological care in Africa, particularly for breast and cervical cancer, and examine access across six countries: Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa. We conclude that improving access across the continuum of care requires an optimized patient pathway and medicines value chain, stronger regulatory frameworks, and more agile financing tools. We also highlight the importance of data-driven approaches, public-private partnerships, equity and universal health coverage to ensure scalability, affordability and availability of cancer prevention, screening and treatment. We hope that this paper sheds more light and raises awareness on the burden and impact of non-communicable diseases, which is extremely timely for the conversations we are holding this week at the World Health Assembly and prepare us for critical events in 2025. #WeAreIQVIA #IQVIAPublicHealth #globalhealth #cancer #cancercare #oncology #access #UHC #NCD #SDG3 #WHA77
