This year’s theme as per IMO is #SafetyTipsAtSea highlighting Safety as the ultimate priority onboard. As our CEO, Paolo Enoizi states: “At GasLog, we really treasure your well-being and your safety, and want to emphasize that the responsibility and the authority to do this is a shared one. That is why we made sure that we were talking about the responsibility and the authority to stop the work if it is unsafe. This means that if you notice something going wrong, if you notice something that does not go according to the 10 Safety Rules, you have the authority and the responsibility to stop it, to notify someone else. In the end, we all want to do a great job. And a great job is only a safe job. Thank you for your support!” Recently, we introduced the “10 Safety Rules”: these guidelines underscore our commitment to our seafarers’ well-being and operational excellence. We prioritize safety because we aim to enhance productivity, minimize risks, and foster a culture of vigilance and responsibility. 🚢 **Standing by for Mooring Operations: Ensuring Safety and Efficiency** 🚢 I recently had the opportunity to be involved in mooring operations on board a ship, and it highlighted the critical importance of teamwork, preparation, and safety in this essential maritime process. Here is some keys to keep on mind when going for mooring operation as a third mate or cadet 🔹 **Preparation is Key:** Proper preparation is vital to the success of mooring operations. The crew prepare the mooring rope for easy and fast slack when sending the heaving lines, taking into account environmental factors such as wind and which side along side and mooring plans. 🔹 **Clear Communication:** Effective communication between the ship's crew and shore personnel or tugboats is essential. Usually it is done through the pilot and you receive your orders from your captain and dont take any action without the master order except (if it affects the safety of the crew )It enables coordinated actions, minimizes risks, and ensures a smooth operation. Standardized hand signals or radio communication protocols help facilitate this process. 🔹 **Safety First:** Safety is paramount during mooring operations. Crew members wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to established safety procedures. Always understand the snap back zones and where to stand and danger places to avoid for yourself and your crew ( safety first ) 🔹 **Vigilance and Readiness:** When standing by, the crew remains alert and ready to respond to instructions or emergencies. They maintain situational awareness, exercise teamwork, and stay focused on their assigned tasks to ensure a seamless operation. ABANDON SHIP DRILL 🆘 The decision to abandon the ship is made by the Master. The Master is the one to give the order to abandon the vessel, after all safety attempts have been attempted. Usually, the vessel offers the best chance of survival for the vessel's crew. A liferaft or lifeboat is the last resort in case it is no longer safe to stay onboard. Lifeboat drills are also known as abandon-ship drills and are intended to prepare crew members and passengers for a potential evacuation at sea. Every crew member shall participate in at least one abandon ship drill and one fire drill every month. The drills of the crew shall take place within 24 h of the ship leaving a port if more than 25% of the crew have not participated in abandon ship and fire drills on board that particular ship in the previous month.
