This was much debated ( ok maybe a lot by me) at the goodclothes show at the NEC this weekend.
SustainableFashion is surely an oxymoron ?
Sustainability is as nebulous as marketing always was. I find it useful as an umbrella term since others think they recognise this as a sector of the fashion / textiles industry.
But you might also recall people saying they work in marketing - always vague!
Sadly perception is far from 9/10ths of the reality & is more like a fraction of a very low percentage however fast the more circular sector grows, mass fast fashion scales faster!
Eco - green - ethical fashion have all had their moments - those terms seem narrower than sustainable! Weren’t they clearer ?
Circular offers hope but how is fashion distribution going to become circular when we have an incredibly dominant, global hub & spoke logistics system ? How many more circular fashion initiatives are doomed to crash as they take on Venture capital with an entrenched linear model ?
Circular’ish is probably as close to reality as we are getting? Circular minds united!

Sustainability is being overused, but this isn't a trend or a checklist item—it's a core value that demands genuine commitment and action.
This journey isn't just about the big leaps; every small step contributes to a larger impact.
Embracing sustainability means moving beyond profit as the sole indicator of success, especially in a world where our environmental footprint can no longer be ignored.
It's about integrating social and/or, eco-conscious decisions into our lives and work, driven by a heartfelt belief to make a difference.
We're very interested to know how are you embedding responsible/sustainable practices into your brand and daily life?
(A few months ago, in an important venue in Rome, we heard somebody talking about the SDG and said, imagine the impact of one small action if this could be done by the 8 Billion inhabitants... maybe a bit less taking out the babies and very elderly.. but IMAGINE!)
What is that insight or action, proving that sustainability is not just what we do, but who we are.

2 decades ago I couldn’t give a crap about our earth.
However, today marks a doubly special day in my household. Not only do we get to celebrate the gift of life (child’s bday) but we also honor our commitment to our planets well being.
Did you know that every day, over one million trees are cut down to produce traditional toilet paper? 😱 That's why I'm proud Who Gives A Crap, a company that saw the opportunity to make a change in 2012 by developing eco-friendly products was created. 🌳💚
For me, sustainability isn't just a buzzword – it's personal. I believe in equity for all beings, human and ecological alike. It's not enough to defer the problem to future generations. As a leader, I'm committed to having a plan A, B, and even Z, because there is NO Planet B. 🌎
During a keynote I gave on sustainability, I posed some reflective questions so we have a plan NOW🤷🏽♀️:
🌱 Is humanity sustainable in maintaining our current lifestyle for future generations?
🌱 Are we prioritizing human and ecological well-being now and for centuries to come?
🌱 What impact do we want our footprint to have?
Every choice we make has an impact, not just on ourselves but on others and the planet we all call home.
Let's remember that as we strive to create a more sustainable future.
💡 Together, we can turn small actions into big changes. Are you with me?

🔍 Did you also know that 88% of consumers would like brands to help them lead sustainable lifestyle?

When we opened The Good Shop Mauritius we had to come up with a new model for second-hand goods and waste.
We refuse to import second-hand items from other nations and we don't dump our unsellable items on other markets. We had to think circularly.
It's still not perfect*, but we are having a big impact on a small island nation.
* You can help out the worldwide problem of waste by buying less, buying second-hand, repairing what you have, and refusing to buy clothes made of plastic. Check your labels before you buy for polyester, acrylic, nylon, polypropylene, spandex, lycra, and elastane, to name a few!
*Systematically vote for leaders to ban plastic use and hold polluters accountable. A few of the biggest polluters in fast fashion are H&M, Shein, and Zara.
Poor quality plastic clothes have limited second-hand value and NO recyclable or biodegradable solution. None. They are burnt releasing chemicals or dumped polluting soils and waterways.
If you are in Mauritius, please consider voting for us to promote our work.
