Hot take: I am NOT an ally. 💥 The word "ally" has become a label that sets the bar too low. Being supportive, open-minded, and actively engaged in allyship should be the norm, not the exception. You either make a conscious choice every day to stand for inclusivity, or you don’t. Allyship is a fundamental part of who we are, not a special title we earn. In essence, the qualities of an ally embody basic human traits, integral to how we interact with the world and each other. Are YOU ready to stand in solidarity with me as a non-ally (but ONLY if you can safely do so)? 👉🏼 Here's how you can shake things up: Ditch the Label, Embrace the Action: Forget calling yourself an ally. Show up, speak out, and act. Actions prove commitment, not titles. Challenge the Norm, Not Just the Obvious: Go beyond the easy fights. Tackle the subtle biases and norms that keep injustice alive. Live the Cause, Don't Just “Like” It: Don't just support in words or online likes. Make your daily life a reflection of the change you want to see. Now, more than ever, people desire to feel seen, heard, and recognized. They want to feel relevant, included, and like they matter. But so many people don’t. They feel invisible, excluded, and overlooked. They wonder if they matter. Last week, I have the opportunity to interview Mita Mallick about the topic of her new book - Reimagine Inclusion. Something she said in our conversation and wrote in her book was this: 💬 “Inclusion doesn’t start at our conference room tables; it starts at our kitchen tables.” It starts in our homes and in our communities. As we celebrate the life and legacy of MLK Jr. today, I think the greatest gift we can give each other is the gift of listening, the gift of our presence. To seek to understand. To do the hard work of looking in the mirror and being willing to learn, grow, and change. To read a book like this one that - through storytelling, wit, and wisdom - shows you how to transform your workplace and yourself. When I consider having someone on my team with responsibility, I appreciate their dedication. I can always count on someone who has Responsibility as their strength. INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY & ACCESSIBILITY Change Agent! People love the thought of the acronym, but seldomly like the RESPONSIBILITY and Tenacity it takes to be the Change that must be present to navigate in higher Ed or any other arena. It’s challenging, uncomfortable and difficult to stand against decades old barriers and practices that simply must be dismantled. But remember, you’re equipped to Make A Difference and Freedom, Justice and Equality are all worth fighting for! I advocate for myself, my children and those unable to advocate for themselves throughout and across multiple communities of underrepresented individuals. Yesterday was a wonderful opportunity to learn from as well as share with two powerful thought leaders, Dr. Kimberly Derryberry and Dr. Gregory Czar who shared that we must all learn to listen to our small still voice. The one fueled by Emotional Intelligence. When we do this it opens the mind to new ideas and perspectives about how we perceive others and ourselves.” “ Which piggybacked on Dr. Derryberry who shared that there is no better teacher than life itself and one must get uncomfortable in order to be positioned for change.” To conclude this powerful and informative discussion, I shared that one must never forget the importance of learning to cultivate a growth mindset, one that encourages you to develop empathy! Empathy is undoubtedly the catalyst to developing strong relationships and supports the critical thinking skills you’ll need to problem solve in order to maintain unity and harmony within society!
