Healthcare workers experience some of the highest rates of injuries caused by workplace violence than any other profession. Now, it appears based on survey data that the steps employers are taking are not viewed as sufficient by these at-risk workers. The recent Workplace Violence Prevention Training Annual Report for health care came back with the headline finding that healthcare workers don't feel confident in workplace safety plans. In fact, more than half (55%) said violence prevention plans at their workplace were only somewhat effective, or simply ineffective. Worse still, more than half (55%) said violence prevention plans at their workplace were only somewhat effective, or simply ineffective. In recent years, strides have been made to enhance #WorkplaceSafety through regulations, innovative technologies and hazard assessments. Despite these efforts, research highlights a troubling disparity: workers of color are more likely to be employed in high-risk occupations. NSC recently released a new report titled “The Intersection of DEI and MSDs: Ensuring Equitable Outcomes” to help with #MSDPrevention, the most common workplace injury. An analysis conducted by Horizon Platforms has drawn attention to the enormous costs incurred as a result of workplace injury and illness across the UK. The data reveals that the collective cost of illness and injury in the workplace amounts to £20.7 billion per year. This includes the direct costs of compensation and medical expenses, as well as the indirect costs of absenteeism and reduced productivity. Each affected employee takes an average of seventeen days off, for work related illness, and nine days off as a result of injury at work. With this in mind, employers would be well advised to avoid the costs of expensive compensation and whistleblowing claims by ensuring that workplace health and safety regulations are properly complied with.
