Let’s talk about trade shows. Vast halls filled with endless rows of booths, all trying to outshine each other with flashy displays, pointless swag, and an army of sales reps eager to jump at the first hint of eye contact. The format hasn't changed in decades, and it is TIRED. Instead of packing the floor with booths where every conversation feels like a pitch, we need space that encourage real dialogue - like roundtables, discussion zones, and workshops. Salespeople need help and training to make the interactions worthwhile. Leads are not swiping registration nametags. Technology exists to help attendees and exhibitors connect meaningfully yet most apps at these events are impossible to master, don't share the right info and are so clunky - that's even if the event WiFi actually enables you to use it! We need to make the education and content elements truly interactive with live demos, hands-on sessions, or innovation labs where attendees can engage with new products and solutions. The swag has to go. Branded pens, stress balls et al are a waste of money and fit only for landfill. Believe me, they are not the reason customers will remember you. The dreaded "50% see-through rule" For those unfamiliar, some trade shows require that 𝟓𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.The idea is to create an open and inviting floor while preventing booths from becoming massive walls that block visibility for neighboring exhibitors. 𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐩: Push the boundaries (just a little 😉). It never hurts to ask if you can flex the guidelines. For example, see if a header above the typical line-of-sight could be approved. Honest take: our booth at Automate was an 8/10. 👉 Some parts of the displays didn't align with our current branding 👉 The arrangement wasn't fully optimized to engage visitors 👉 Our lead capture system was clunkier than we wanted BUT Our lead count increased over 2x from last year. And compared to previous shows where qualified opportunities were ~10% of total scans, the general consensus this year is that almost half are solid leads. Slight inconveniences (at a trade show) don't stop your best-fit customers when they are in-market. Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t improve the at-show conversion experience. But when you decide what booth design updates you focus on, especially ones that will cost you 💸 ... List ideas that check off one of more of the following boxes: ✅ It replaces a part of your booth that is old and literally falling apart ✅ It makes you easier to find at the show ✅ It makes you stand out among the booths around you ✅ It helps people figure out what you do ✅ It conveys your differentiated value better Then choose 1~3 of them that you'll implement in your next booth design. Because that's probably all you have budget for. And because the bigger focus should be on improving impact beyond the booth.
