Drop Jumps and ACL Stiffness ACL health is one of the most important components of sports agility (and mobility in general, for that matter). Avoiding contact in game is a good way to prevent ACL injuries, but non-contact ACL tears are still very common. What, then, do we do in order to prevent these injuries from happening at all? A 2018 study by Abdelsattar, Konrad, and Tilp (cited below) suggests a good place to start. This research used a simple drop jump test to discover the difference in performance between a springy, unworked ACL on the cusp of injury and a stiff ACL typical of a rigorously trained athlete. The results? Stiffer ACLs resulted in more explosive movement and had a lower ground contact time than springy ACLs. Both of these factors were instantly determinable from a few simple drop jumps.
