Dear Colleagues, A recent publication in the American Journal of Case Reports sheds light on an intriguing case of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in a patient with Wilson's disease. This rare autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by copper accumulation, presents a range of clinical manifestations. With only 14 reported cases, the link between Wilson's disease and hepatobiliary malignancies remains unclear. The successful treatment of the patient through resection and adjuvant chemotherapy highlights the importance of careful monitoring and tailored treatment strategies for favorable outcomes. This case report prompts further exploration into the potential occurrence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in Wilson's disease. Comings and Goings: Researchers detail data from First 15 autoimmune disease patients treated with CAR-T (NEJM) In these case studies 15 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (8 patients), idiopathic inflammatory myositis (3 patients), or systemic sclerosis (4 patients) who received a single infusion of CD19 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells after preconditioning with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide were followed for up to 2 years (12-15 mo median). Did you know? Pompe disease is a severe genetic disorder. Even if treated, those with infant-onset Pompe rarely survive beyond early childhood. The current standard treatment, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), can extend life expectancy into adolescence. However, ERT has significant shortcomings. It does not target skeletal muscle effectively, leading to progressive muscle weakness and respiratory issues over time. Moreover, ERT requires lifelong bi-weekly infusions, which can be burdensome for patients and families.   There is an urgent unmet need for more efficient therapies that can provide better disease management, improve quality of life, and extend survival.
