No doubt you are all aware that TikTok, created by Chinese company Bytedance, is one of the world’s largest social media apps with more than 1BILLION active users. What you may not have seen this week is the announcement as them as the official partners of the Esports World Cup. 'Is this because they have loads of money and just...'why not?' Probably not, as this partnership helps strengthen and bolster its user figures and associates it with the Pro side of gaming. It helps them pioneer in modern sports culture. Why does this work for TikTok? 👀 Partnering with the Esports World Cup ensures TikTok is a main source of behind-the-scenes content for future esport events, and a major content partner in general. 📱 As part of the partnership, TikTok will launch an EWC Hub within the app. This segment will show content from the EWC official broadcasters, teams and players. 💡TikTok and the EWC will create a weekly show that features reports and news from the Esports World Cup, to be aired through the TikTok app. It is definitely a good deal for both, so we thought it would be good to share the value points in this deal as we see them. 🖐🏻 Hi everyone, I'm Doğukan. I was born in a small town in Türkiye (you've probably never heard of my town, even if I tell you its name :D). My gaming passion began in 2006 when I first encountered computers and the internet. Despite the prevailing sentiment that these pursuits were frivolous, my passion for gaming only grew stronger. By 2012, I had immersed myself in Counter-Strike esports, beginning my journey into this vibrant and challenging industry. I want to share a story that is very close to my heart – the journey of GG Esports Media – a project born out of passion and perseverance in the face of immense challenges. Four years ago, with nothing but a dream and an unwavering love for esports, I founded GG Esports Media in Turkey. What began as a modest venture quickly turned into a mission to create the largest esports platform and media outlet in the country. However, the path was anything but easy. In the beginning, we were a small team of enthusiasts working tirelessly around the clock. We faced countless obstacles – from financial constraints that threatened to shut us down to the daunting task of making a name for ourselves in an industry dominated by big players. There were moments when it felt like the odds were stacked against us, but giving up was never an option. When the financial challenges became insurmountable, we had to close our website a year ago, and the team went their separate ways. But even then, I couldn’t let go of the vision. I decided to continue GG Esports Media alone, pouring every bit of my energy and resources into our Instagram presence. It was a daunting task – creating news, statistics, content designs, and engaging reels single-handedly, all while battling the reality of limited funds. Despite the hardships, my determination never wavered. I believed in the potential of GG Esports Media, and slowly but surely, we began to see the fruits of our labor. Our Instagram account started gaining traction, and soon, we became Turkey's most-followed and interacted esports media platform on Instagram. We even earned a meta-verified blue tick, a testament to our growing influence. Our journey is far from over. I was asked an interesting question today while at #MWC2024. The question was essentially: “…with an audience of followers of well over 130 million across your esports and influencer channels and viewership that goes into the millions for many of your games… are you not competing with platforms like Twitch for ad and sponsor dollars?” My answer. Yes, we are. The value differential between an esports org like us and a platform like Twitch however is monumental. Partner brands like Bell, TD, Telefonica and AMD can of course run ad-insertion algorithms at CPM rates with platforms like Twitch or YouTube. They can even insert their ads directly into our broadcasts. They can choose to interrupt a stream and insert an annoying ad for 5 seconds or 20 seconds, use creepy privacy-invasive algorithms to decide who to target, and trade off delivering a tiny bit of information about their product to an unwilling audience and generate an awful lot of bad will for interrupting a broadcast midstream. They can even make the ad non-skippable, which has led to the emergence of an entire industry of ad blockers… …or these brands can partner with us, be a part of the broadcast and support the teams and the players and the streamers and the games that millions of fans follow and watch every day. They can create tremendous brand awareness, value and goodwill for a generation of fans that will carry the banner for their product forever, because they connected with them authentically. Because they supported their passions. You can be a part of this moment… or you can interupt it. No brainer.
