Game Could Also Save the Planet: How the Youth Can Become Environmental Heroes! Environmental degradation is becoming increasingly evident and urgent. From rising sea levels due to global warming to piles of waste harming ecosystems, this situation demands collective action from all layers of society, including the younger generation. They hold a key role in environmental preservation. But how can we best communicate this crucial message to those with short attention spans? One promising solution is through games as an interactive and engaging medium. Today's youth grow up in the digital era, where games are not just entertainment but also effective educational tools. Games captivate attention and inspire action through deep narratives and interactive experiences. By leveraging games, we can convey essential environmental messages in a more engaging and memorable way. We at Anantarupa Studios has a significant opportunity to use our game, Lokapala, as a medium for environmental education. With a large player base and rich narratives, Lokapala can serve as a platform to emphasize the importance of protecting the environment. Integrating stories that highlight environmental issues in Lokapala is an effective way to raise awareness. Characters in the game can face situations that depict the impacts of environmental damage and their efforts to restore it. Such narratives can inspire players to be more concerned about environmental issues in real life. Furthermore, Lokapala can mobilize its player community to participate in environmental actions, both online and offline. Digital campaigns on recycling, character design contests with environmental themes, and volunteer activities for cleaning up the environment can be part of these initiatives. Involvement in real-world activities provides a profound experience and strengthens the commitment to environmental protection. Using games as a tool for environmental education is not just about adding relevant story elements or challenges. It's about building a culture of environmental awareness among players. Digital campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the importance of recycling and reducing plastic waste can be run by encouraging players to undertake in-game tasks related to environmental care. Real-world actions such as beach or community clean-ups can also be organized by the Lokapala player community. With the right approach, Lokapala can be a powerful medium to inspire young people to take action and make positive changes for the environment. With compelling narratives, active communities, and creative campaigns, games can effectively foster awareness and real action in environmental conservation. The youth can become not only the successors but also the pioneers in environmental preservation efforts. Through interactive media like games, we can deliver crucial messages about environmental protection more effectively and with long-lasting impact. Happy World Oceans Day! #WorldOceansDay

Welcome to Strategies! STRATEGIES is the short name for the Horizon Europe funded project Sustainable Transition for Europe’s Game Industries. The project will support Europe’s game development industries in making vital changes to their business and production practices in support of reaching the emissions targets of the European Green Deal. We will also work with Europe’s game developers to make the most of the opportunities of this transition, promoting games as ways of communicating with the public, engaging diverse audiences with the issue of the climate crisis, and supporting wider societal changes to help Europe’s citizens – and the wider world – in adapting to and mitigating climate change. STRATEGIES began life in the ECOGAMES project, an initiative at Utrecht University’s Center for Game Research that investigated how games explore environmental concerns and provide new spaces to imagine and practice alternative forms of living. The volume that emerged from that project, Ecogames: Playful Perspectives on the Climate Crisis, includes work from members of the STRATEGIES consortium, and will be published open access on 19-01-2024 by Amsterdam University Press. Building on the research, and the collaborations initiated by the ECOGAMES project, Dr Chloé Germaine and Dr Paul Wake (of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Manchester Game Centre) brought together the STRATEGIES consortium in order to take the research forward. Bringing together the expertise of environmental scientists, business and policy experts, scholars of game studies, game designers, game developer organisations, the team at Manchester Metropolitan University led on the writing of an ambitious research proposal that sets out to: 1. Gather evidence relating to working conditions and business infrastructure in the game development industries; 2. Generate data relating to knowledge, skills and attitudes in Europe’s game industries; 3. inform sustainable production in game development; 4. Propose business model recommendations that support the game industries in making a sustainable transition; 5. Develop practical toolkits that enable the game industries to exploit opportunities in design; 6. Develop bespoke carbon literacy for use in university game development training programmes. The project was granted funding by Horizon Europe and UK Research and Innovation in summer 2023. It will be overseen by Utrecht University and Manchester Metropolitan University, with Professor Joost Raessens (UU) and Dr Paul Wake (MMU) coordinating and directing the research and Dr Chloé Germaine (MMU) leading on the communication of project results, supported by experts in policy at The Copernicus Institute, business development experts at the Dutch Game Garden, and the climate action charity, Possible. The STRATEGIES team are looking forward to the project’s formal start in February 2024 and we invite you to follow our progress here, on Twitter and on LinkedIn. Chloé, Paul & Joost

We LOVE organisations championing #sustainability But we're not going to lie, it's really disappointing to see organisations ignoring the #environmental impact of their websites. Yes, #website #carbonemissions are a thing. Today is the first day of The National Sustainability Festival #NSF24, right here in #Melbourne. But sustainabilityfestival.au scores a rather disappointing 'F' on the website sustainability rating system. That means an estimated 1.76g of CO2 is emitted each time someone loads their homepage. Times that number by the amount of people visiting the site during the festival and things start to really add up. The most frustrating part? So much of it is easily avoidable. Conscious and deliberate #sustainabledesign and #sustainabledevelopment means you can have a content rich, immersive brand experience, just without the guilty conscience. #sustainablewebdesign doesn't mean you have to have a plain and boring website that doesn't do much. You can have the best of both worlds, you just need to approach it in the right way. Interested in #website #sustainability? Drop me a message or visit beleaf.au
