Having been part of transitions as a board member and senior leader, I've seen how those that were planned, although still challenging and emotional, went much more smoothly. From 1972, when Katharine Graham of the Washington Post Co. became the first woman Fortune 500 CEO, it took until 2023 – more than 50 years – for women to reach an all-time high of 10.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs.
