The pressures students face today—whether academic, social, or personal—can sometimes feel overwhelming, and these pressures often manifest as signs of distress that may go unnoticed until it’s too late. Recognizing these signs early is crucial; parents and teachers play pivotal roles in identifying and supporting students through challenging times. As we approach the end of #mentalhealthawarenessweek I have been thinking about people’s perceptions of who we are and what really goes on behind closed doors. I have also started to question why we feel we have to navigate the ups and downs of life without professional support networks guiding and upskilling us along the way. As someone who has worked in education for 20yrs now, the conversations with students and staff around mental health and well-being haven’t changed much either, and theres still the fear of not being understood or being judged by others, alongside a growing misconception that as “adults” we should have figured out life by now, and found a way to cope. Despite the work that so many people and organisations are doing to raise awareness of the importance of looking after mental health, the stigma remains, and we often don’t hear or see the cries for help as they’ve been internalised and masked with a smile. So maybe the responsibility falls on society as a whole now, to share a truer reflection of who we are and what our support networks look like behind closed doors, as we navigate our seemingly successful lives. #mhaw2024 #mentalhealth
