Founding Director, Women’s Age Lab, Women’s College Hospital, Professor of Medicine and Public Health and RTO/ERO Chair, University of Toronto.
Today is Ageism Awareness Day. Many of the challenges faced by older women stem from the underlying, cross-cutting issue of gendered ageism (discrimination based on both their sex and age). Addressing the inequities experienced by older women today is a complex and potentially costly problem, but one that demands attention. To start, we need to make gendered ageism and its impact on older women visible, so decision makers can recognise and take action to address its systemic effect. Sometimes we forget the obvious—one day we will all be older. #AgeismAwarenessDay #WomensAgeLab #GenderedAgeism https://lnkd.in/exVcivqp

We know who we are and what we need! Other people and power centers should stop trying to strip us of agency over our very lives! https://lnkd.in/gEc_FBqM

Cultural norms often silence discussions about family planning in many African communities, but the conversation is too important to ignore! Breaking the silence and raising awareness can lead to healthier families, empowered women, and stronger communities. Other benefits of breaking the silence around family planning include: 1. Improved Health Outcomes – Open discussions lead to better access to contraception, reducing maternal and infant mortality. 2. Empowered Women – By speaking up, women gain control over their reproductive choices, leading to more educational and economic opportunities. 3. Reduced Unintended Pregnancies – Awareness and education help prevent unplanned pregnancies thereby improving family wellbeing. 4. Cultural Shift – Normalizing family planning helps challenge stigmas and promote gender equality. It’s time to open up and #TalkAboutIt—for better health outcomes for all. #BreakingStigma #FamilyPlanning #HealthierCommunities #WomensHealth
