There are two Dealerships that I know and perfectly exemplify the truth behind this over beliefs. One has roughly 20 salespeople, the other has 5. Which one do you think is selling more cars a month on average? It's the one with five. They have a well established Sales Team, a Rock Solid approach, and their Marketing is on point. The other goes through salespeople like toilet paper, doesn't really train their employees, and their ads are just basic third party generic junk. All they have is more money to burn through, but eventually that is going to run out. Meanwhile the other is going to keep progressively getting better and better. Yeah they will add more salespeople eventually, but only as needed and as they grow. One is built with short term thinking in mind and is running a rat race every 30 days, and the other is trying to build a business that will last well past all of us reading about it now.

If you plan to hire a Business Development Manager (BDM) or Account Executive (AE) for your SaaS/AI company, which is currently generating an ARR of £2-£10 million, avoid making these common mistakes: 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸: Technical knowledge can be learned. Prioritise candidates with strong sales skills and a proven track record in business development. Hiring Someone Because They Have a Black Book of Customers Who Are Also Your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP): Relying solely on a candidate's existing contacts is short-sighted. Consider how effective they will be once this limited resource is exhausted. Assess their ability to generate new leads and build long-term customer relationships. Hiring Someone Because They Have a Great Track Record with a Well-Known Tech Giant: Success at a big-name company doesn't always translate to a smaller, growing company. Candidates might struggle without the brand recognition to open doors. Look for individuals who can demonstrate success in environments similar to yours. Hiring Someone Who Has No Proof of Success: Always request evidence of past achievements. This validation helps ensure that their claims during interviews are accurate and verifiable. Hiring Someone Without Speaking to Multiple References, Customers, or Colleagues: Thoroughly check references, including former colleagues and clients. This step provides valuable insights into the candidate's performance, work ethic, and interpersonal skills. By avoiding these pitfalls, you can better ensure that you select a BDM or AE who will contribute meaningfully to your company's growth and success.
