Electronic Combat (EK) is a key capability to ensure the success of military operations. It focuses on efforts to control and exploit the electromagnetic spectrum for the benefit of friendly forces, while denying that advantage to adversaries. This is where 'luWES'(Airborne Effects in the Electromagnetic Spectrum) comes into play: it acts as an integrated strategy to counter enemy air defences. ‘luWES’ works with several subsystems: The stand-off jammer (SOJ) disrupts the enemy’s communications network. The escort jammer (ESJ) provides direct protection to fighter jets against enemy air defences. Stand-in jammers (SIJ) operate within anti access/area denial zones and force the enemy to react. More and more nations are realising that they don’t have enough air defence capability. Australia was an early adopter of the NASAMS system. The elegance of a land based system that shares (broadly) common munitions with airforce platforms is obvious. NASAMS is great but what we have created is a logistics problem. If there are only so many missiles available…who gets priority ? What we need is a corresponding boost in both the number of launchers being procured (we will need lots of these things) and a boost in the number of munitions available for national air defence. We can’t control every Defence challenge that are currently facing but there is some low hanging fruit that we can and should get going on.

Regardless of the factions' motivations, the inherent risk of unintended consequences, such as the accidental targeting of civilian aircraft, is apparent. The responsibility lies with the civilian aviation industry to remain vigilant. Monitoring developments on the ground are crucial. Proactive measures are pivotal in mitigating the inadvertent dangers associated with advanced anti-air weaponry potentially falling in the hands of these factions, ensuring the safety of civilian air traffic within the region. #airspace #conflictzones #czib #aviation
