If you are attending CONSTRUCT CANADA next week, below is the session I am hosting. Stop by, say hello and take away insights and observations I have gathered over the past 30 years serving the ICI construction industry. Overcoming The Human Challenges of On-Site Productivity Wednesday, November 29 at 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM Project sites are complex social environments where real-time conflicts arise. Once shovels hit the ground, site and project leaders are constantly navigating competing priorities. This session explores the relationship between the host state (the project site), the home state (subcontractors and labour) and exiles (project owners, authorities having jurisdiction, consultants). The speaker will explore the skills that all stakeholders and participants must bring to the site in order to maintain productivity at the human level, uncovering why per person hour efficiency on-site has not improved in over 40 years. Insights and outcomes will allow attendees to self-audit the way they approach diplomacy, tolerance and legitimacy of each stakeholders role in the project.

In infrastructure construction, the proverbial wisdom "If you look closely, most overnight successes took a long time" by Steve Jobs resonates deeply. We witness the grandeur of completed projects and marvel at their efficiency and scale. However, what often goes unnoticed are the years of meticulous planning, relentless hard work, and overcoming countless obstacles that precede the unveiling of these structures. Much like a towering tree with roots deeply embedded in the soil, infrastructure projects rely on a solid foundation built over time. The process involves extensive research, feasibility studies, securing funding, navigating regulatory frameworks, and coordinating with various stakeholders. These are the unseen roots that provide stability and nourishment for the project's growth. In the realm of construction, success is not instantaneous. It's a culmination of persistent effort, resilience in the face of challenges, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Every milestone achieved is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the individuals and teams involved in bringing these projects to fruition. So, the next time we admire a marvel of infrastructure, let's remember the wisdom imparted by Steve Jobs and acknowledge the hidden journey of perseverance that paved the way for its success. After all, true greatness often lies beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered by those who dare to look closer. If you're interested in exploring opportunities in the infrastructure area, don't hesitate to send us your CV. https://lnkd.in/dsWzdpmF #seniorplanningengineer #infrastructure #infraspec

When it comes to underground utilities projects, scheduling can be a nightmare. It's like trying to juggle flaming swords while riding a unicycle. I've seen it all and here are the most common pitfalls that can derail your project. 1. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘀 Permits and approvals can take forever. Thinking they'll get done in a week? Think again. Plan for delays. They will happen. 2. 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 Rain, snow, extreme heat, they all slow down the work. Always factor in weather related delays. It's not just a “maybe”, it’s a guarantee. 3. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 When field and office teams don't communicate well, projects fall apart. Use tech to bridge the gap. Daily updates, clear instructions, and constant communication are non-negotiable. 4. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 Assuming there are no conflicts with existing utilities? Big mistake. Always do a thorough check and expect the unexpected. 5. 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Things will go wrong. Have a Plan B, C, and D. A solid contingency plan can save you when things go south. 6. 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆𝘀 Skipping detailed site surveys can lead to unexpected obstacles. Invest time in thorough site assessments to avoid costly surprises. 7. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Underestimating the manpower and equipment needed can cause delays. Make sure you have enough resources to handle the project efficiently. 8. 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Not keeping stakeholders informed can lead to dissatisfaction and conflicts. Regular updates and clear communication are key to managing expectations. 9. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Incomplete or missing documentation can lead to misunderstandings and legal issues. Ensure all project details are well documented and accessible to the team. Getting a handle on these issues can transform a chaotic project into a smooth operation. It’s not about avoiding problems, it’s about being prepared for them. With the right mindset and preparation, you can handle anything that comes your way. #FiberOptics #ProjectManagement #Telecommunications #Construction
