We've spent £1m on lab equipment over the last 12 months. Biotech used to be driven by scientists holding pipettes, but now liquid handling machines and automation are driving throughput. The Echo liquid handler (pictured) is one example of how lab work has changed. Pipette-holding scientists commonly work in a volume range of µl to ml ranges, but the Echo can dispense 25 nanolitre droplets (that is 0.000000025 litres). The documentation of experiments has also changed a lot. Back when I was let loose in the lab, I'd write experiments on sticky notes and then lose them. Actually, I would sometimes write it on the bench and then accidentally spill ethanol on it. 🤪 That approach doesn't cut it today, so we've moved to completely digital records (hence the computers that look like a stock trader's desk). We can track where samples are, update versions of protocols, track problems, and more. The general trend is that labs are more like production lines of read / write / manipulate DNA. The early days of lab automation were heavily focused around high-throughput screening applications with the idea that if we could just test enough samples we would surely find a “hit”. I think of this strategy as the “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while” approach 🥜). Today, lab automation is much more about working smarter, as opposed to just working harder. We prioritize getting better shots on goal, as opposed to just taking more shots.⚽️🥅 It’s Quality, over Quantity. To accomplish this, scientists are using computational and predictive, AI-powered tools to narrow the search space to a more focused area, and then sampling within that space to validate the prediction. Each new set of results can be fed back into the predictive tools to improve their accuracy for the next round. CSL transformed and optimized every step of their miniaturized purification experiments for a 60% reduction in time spent on workflow creation and data processing. They also saw: - A 50% increase in automation usage within the lab - Simplified access to complex DOE methodologies - Standardized and reproducible experiments across sites and devices How'd they do it? CSL used Synthace to optimize their experiments, using the no-code workflow design to preview and execute their experiments while eliminating human error in the design and execution process. Synthace's drag-and-drop design translated their human-language directions into complex robot instructions with no custom scripting required. They could also collaborate within the software to share the results, methods and analysis of their experiments within their group. Not only did they see a substantial increase in automation utilization in the lab, researchers could rapidly scale their workflow development, standardizing and reproducing experiments across sites and devices.
