Fundamentally throughout our lives, we all want to be treated with respect and dignity. It’s essential that people being looked after in care homes feel understood and supported, and have an active role in their own care. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) define dignity and respect as “making sure that people have privacy when they need and want it, treating them as equals and providing any support they might need to be autonomous, independent and involved in their local community.” Whether it’s through personalised treatment plans, facilitating independence or supporting your patients’ needs, how do you promote dignity in care? At Empower Her English, we believe that raising awareness among employers in the care industry to incorporate English learning into their employment schemes is crucial for empowering workers, promoting upward mobility, and combating modern slavery. At Empower Her English we believe that educational workshops for employers in the care industry would highlight the benefits of English language proficiency for both employees and the organisation. Improved English skills lead to better communication, enhanced job performance, and increased opportunities for career advancement. By forging partnerships with language learning providers or educational institutions employers in the care industry could offer discounted English language courses to employees in the care industry. Employers in the care industry could integrate English language learning modules into existing training programs for care workers and build on the practical application of English skills in daily work tasks, such as communicating with patients, collaborating with colleagues, and understanding written policies and procedures. Employers could incentivise English language learning by offering rewards or recognition for achieving certain proficiency levels. This could include bonuses, promotions, or opportunities for career development within the organisation. Employers could share success stories of care workers who have benefited from improving their English skills, such as achieving career advancement, securing higher-paying positions, or enhancing their overall quality of life. Personal anecdotes can resonate with employers and inspire them to take action. Employers could offer access to resources and support networks promoting English language learning in the workplace. This could include peer-to-peer mentoring programs where employers can share strategies and learn from each other's experiences. Employers in the care industry can help empower their employees, improve job satisfaction, and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient workforce, ultimately reducing the risk of exploitation and modern slavery.
