What's going on up at Cabin Studios these days? Prepping our Nor'easter mini-rockumentary "Rock Time in Your Town" for release soon! Scripting, shooting, restoring and assembling the film into an engaging story was the big work of course, but to release it requires work like this - properly formatting all the closed captioning to work on streaming platforms. Since Dustin Delage is the Producer/Engineer, he chose the full version of DaVinci Resolve for the film. It works great, but it's a steep learning curve for my limited video software skills - I just jump in when I can. There's still a bit of work to do on the content itself, but the main things now are on a checklist of dotting i's and crossing t's. If you're curious, you can see the 2-minute trailer we made (except the release slipped to spring '24. 😉 https://lnkd.in/e-3RN_7e

When I first got my hands on the script for messages, I knew the main thing I had to do was establish this sense of unease that was present throughout. There are numerous ways of doing this but one I like to go to is music and post production. In regard to music, thankfully I knew Jay from working on a live concert series and knew his style of ambient music would really go a long way into helping establish tone. Whenever I’m running point on a project, I’m really keen on collaboration and very quickly myself, Nat & Jay found a winning formula. In regard to VFX, one way we I found to help create this sense of unease was to abuse the warp stabiliser tool in Premiere pro. Normally, this tool is used to smooth footage but when abused creates a good amount of distortion and warping. When combined with the score makes for unease and discomfort.

For Streamers and Content Creators do you use OBS Studio with multiple capture cards or cameras from the same manufacturer, do you have issues with the capture devices showing exactly the same name under OBS? There's a utility you can use called camrename, but it's only free to use to rename 4 camera instances. It's also closed source, so I have no idea what it does; probably legit but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Moving devices between usb ports means you need to rename them again. I'm writing a similar utility which will be open source (visual studio) and completely free to use. Any interest in testing if you find yourself needing to use this tool? #YouTube #OBS #ContentCreators

We love hearing that CODEX High Density Encoding has meant a production can shoot ARRIRAW when previously their budget wouldn’t have allowed it. On "Five Nights at Freddy’s" it meant DoP Lyn Moncrief and director Emma Tammi could go with the epic ARRI ALEXA 65 camera system without having to deal with equally epic file sizes. Lyn told us, “The format has a magical quality, and for Emma and myself, when you see it side by side, it is instantaneous.” A $25 million budget meant resources weren’t unlimited but CODEX HDE reduces ARRIRAW MXF files to, on average, 60% of their original size with zero impact on image quality. Of course, when you shrink the size of your camera data, you shrink the size of your costs too. Lyn continues, “With HDE, the data considerations are much more similar to other formats, and money-wise it became a non-issue. HDE meant that our tests became more a proof-of-concept of how we wanted to shoot the project. Everyone was very happy to go the HDE route, all the way to editorial.” Of Tammi, he says, “It’s really refreshing to work with a director who is so involved in the visual structure of the movie, with a detailed opinion as to how things should look. We came in with a very good game plan, and I was fortunate to have crew members who had worked with ALEXA 65 before. HDE made it possible for us to execute that plan.” You can find out more about the benefits of HDE to productions and studios on our website at codex.online/codex-hde. #scitechawards #emmys #academyawards #filmmaking

Using high or band pass filters in transitions can be an effective way of making them feel more natural. This can be very effective both in game audio and post/video production. #gameaudio #fmod
