It was a pleasure to host a webinar on the successes and challenges of the &10aDay Child Care Plan. We heard from economist Jim Stanford on the macroeconomic impact of the first years of the program; the executive director of early learning and child care programs gave her perspective on the implementation of the program; we heard about what it has meant for low income families including sole-mother households; and from an early childhood educator about the difference it has made to no longer have increases in wages and benefits tied to increases in parent fees. The overall conclusion: the $10aDay is yielding many positive results in a very short time but needs to be strengthened and expanded so that the benefits are shared more widely and equitably. In Michigan, Black babies are three times more likely to die within their first year than White babies, and Black women are nearly twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation supports the Day One Doula Collective in Grand Rapids, an initiative addressing these disparities by recruiting, training and supporting community-based doulas. Doulas offer culturally affirming care, providing emotional, educational and physical support to birthing parents. This initiative is essential for building a birth support network that improves health outcomes for Black mothers and babies. As a nonprofit serving Black birthing families, Uzazi Village knows that one of the most powerful tools for healthy Black births are doulas and the well-rounded support they provide. Doula guidance has been associated with many positive perinatal health outcomes, such as reduced cesarean sections and length of labor, and lower rates of low birthweight and preterm births. I recently learned about #AgeFriendlyHealthSystems. 💡Did you know, according to IHI and the US Census Bureau, the US population aged 65+ years is expected to nearly double over the next 30 years, from 43.1 million in 2012 to an estimated 83.7 million in 2050.” ✅Hearing this validates how important it will be to incorporate care givers in care plans for aging adults. Connecting with them and their support systems, as well as identifying and solutioning when caregiver support is lacking or nonexistent, will be huge factors in delivering patient center care to the aging population. #AgeFriendlyHealthSystems are on the rise.
