Working professional with skills and experience in various fields now employed part-time in the restaurant food service industry.
Post college graduation in 2016, I wasn’t sure where to look for opportunities to work. In hindsight, I assume it would have been easiest for me to follow in my mom or grandmother’s footsteps in education. Due to my curiosity about other fields and walks of life, I did not consider pursuing that path at all and despite both their well wishes, I was not encouraged to. With a less than stellar online fingerprint during the MySpace era, a liberal arts degree, a low undergraduate gpa, a Spring Semester internship with the Texas House of Representatives, and an infraction with the campus police department at Texas State University, no long term experience to include on my resume. I don’t believe I was any employer’s ideal candidate on paper or in person. I understand how important it is for employees and employers to find a cultural fit for workplace cohesion and how that doesn’t always happen. In my experience, low wage jobs with high turnover aren’t looking for employees to commit to improving the work environment, but for people to fill seats and complete trained tasks in order to earn income and gain access to employee benefits. I’m now 8 years into my career after graduating with a degree in Communication Studies and haven’t had the opportunities I hoped for. I’m not sure if anyone else in my graduating class is experiencing this, but when I see job opportunities that don’t require three references, one or more certifications, an online assessment, a copy of your transcript, an updated resume, cover letter, five years of experience, and a masters degree when you apply for an entry level role you that may not contact you for an interview, I try to spread the word.
