With the global population expected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050, according to the World Resources Institute, the world will need to produce as much as 56% more food. Meeting this growing demand means exploring new and innovative ways to feed everyone. Engineering food to be more nutritious and finding alternative sources of protein, such as crickets, microalgae, and cultivated meats, will be important tools in meeting this challenge. These changes can help make more efficient use of existing resources like energy and space and pave the way for more sustainable global food production. When it comes to exploring alternative approaches to food, standards can help drive innovation and protect consumers by monitoring the safety of food products and methods.
