🌟 Register now: Consensus workshops: Assistive Products Repair In May and June 2024, the Global Disability Innovation Hub (#GDIHub)at UCL, along with The University of Salford of University of Strathclyde and Loughborough University, will come together as part of the EPSRC funded TIDAL N+ to explore the complexity of repair and maintenance of assistive products. The workshop will consider under-represented groups within current repair strategies, and look at the barriers to optimising AT provision. The climate crisis and concerns about environmental sustainability have led to a huge increase in recycling - but while recycling may recover raw materials used to produce a product, the considerable value added to products through design and manufacture is lost. This major financial and environmental cost has focused attention on the importance of repairing existing products; however, current repair strategies present challenging issues for industry, commissioners, and users. Effective repair has to be connected to a wider system of production and regulation. It is a complex issue, and no one actor can achieve what is needed. These workshops will consider the huge barrier to optimising the provision of assistive products. As well as mapping current provision, attendees will build a consensus for next steps. Those in attendance will become founding members of a new repair community as we look to build collaboration in this important and predominantly underexplored area. As a second-year optometry student, Myopia #Awareness Week holds special significance for me. It's a time to reflect on the growing prevalence of myopia and the impact it has on individuals' lives. During this week, I'm reminded of the importance of early detection and proactive management of #myopia to prevent its progression and associated complications. Through my #studies and clinical experiences, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by those affected by myopia. From children struggling in school due to #poor vision to adults experiencing discomfort from digital eye strain, the effects of myopia are far-reaching. During #MyopiaAwarenessWeek, I'm committed to raising awareness about this condition and educating others about the importance of regular eye exams and adopting healthy vision habits. #Together, we can work towards a future where myopia no longer hinders people's quality of life. #Join me in spreading awareness and advocating for better vision care during this important #week. #MyopiaAwarenessWeek #OptometryStudent #EyeHealth

🚀Myopia research on the spotlight 🚀 The Optometry and Vision Science (OVS) a journal of The American Academy of Optometry is celebrating its 101st year.🎉 To mark this milestone, the journal has curated a virtual issue featuring a collection of papers from previously published issues of the journal related to myopia. 👉 Those papers highlight the important contribution the journal has made in supporting myopia research. 👉 All the papers in this virtual issue will be made FREE access for 1-month. We are happy to announce that our topical review by Carla Lanca, Michael Repka & Andrzej Grzybowski on “Studies on Management of Myopia Progression from 2019 to 2021” is on this virtual issue: read our article here. In our review, we concluded that the optimal choice of management of myopia depends on various factors, such as treatment availability, acceptability to child and parents, and specific patient features such as age, baseline myopia, and lifestyle. EYElliance, in collaboration with Ministries of Health and Education, and OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, recently launched Universal School Eye Health at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2023 meeting in New York City, leveraging a donation of children’s eyeglasses and technical support from OneSight to accelerate scale up.   In addition to announcing our ambition to scale across three new countries, we highlighted existing and new efforts by key actors in the Universal School Eye Health Movement: World Health Organization's new initiative focused exclusively on correcting poor vision with glasses, #SPECS2030, will create normative tools, practical implementation and guidance docs that enable quality, affordable, people-centred refractive error services for all.   An upcoming cost benefit analysis by UNESCO-IICBA will include an estimate of potential increase in lifetime earnings when school children in primary and secondary school receive eyeglasses.   Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. is joining forces with EYElliance to strengthen and replicate government-led school eye health in multiple countries in Africa and Southeast Asia. With mounting support, a brighter future for school children around the world is within reach. But more support is needed to catalyze this momentum into sustainable action.
