Working on the comms side of development means I get to help guide visioning while challenging developers on the potential impact of their projects. Every Lost Spaces conference we do is special but this one gave me an opportunity to see perspectives shift in real time. Through exercises like Urban Plan, community engagement workshops and insight from thought leaders like Jim Heid, FASLA, Daniel Parolek and Jason Hyman, our cohort of emerging developers began to see themselves as community partners committed to building impact and legacy beyond the bottom line. Having someone tell me one of their biggest takeaways of our time together was "words are important," let me know our time together hit the mark. I've worked with developers and organizations with beautiful visions that never made it past their balance sheets. DEI commitments, platitudes, and utopias become nice to haves rather than need to haves when there are actual costs attached. The conference was planted many seeds but the one I'm most excited to cultivate is the idea that profit is a byproduct of good development, not the driver. Excited about several projects and the rest of the year ahead but full of gratitude for what we've done. TOMORROW! We’re back with the team from Toole Design Group, Catherine Girves and Tobi Otulana, who we heard from in our last episode on inclusive transportation, and Leah F. Evans, Homeport president and CEO. For this bonus ‘sode we’re discussing how we can support adding density with robust transportation options, including mass transit like light rail and bus rapid transit (BRT). We talk about tackling our public right of way policies and how we can adjust them to make room for modes like biking and walking. Can we add density without having transportation options already built in for the individuals and families who inevitably need to move from one place to another? Would things like BRT and light rail be viable without first establishing density?
