When Adele and TA collide: well not exactly, but this speech did remind me of the importance of evaluating character, not just skills and experience. How when hiring new people, it's essential to look beyond someone's CV and understand the person behind it. Great teams are built not just on talent, but on the strength of their character. And it's only by hiring people that bring the right attitude and values that you can foster long-term success and a positive work environment. But how do we get that balance right of ensuring we're evaluating character effectively vs rejecting people for things like 'culture fit'? (yuck). Be interested to hear any thoughts...

TO ALL THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE How many waves of feminism are you familiar with? Why would there need to be more than one? How global were the waves of feminism? How widely known are any waves of feminism? What will UNIVERSAL gender studies look like? Is it time to finally catalogue who did what so we don't globally REGRESS any further? If we let women's rights slip who are we letting down exactly? Do you know what a suffragette is? How can we teach our daughters and sisters to be precisely as 'cutthroat' as they need and want to be to take on the world? We all need heroes of both genders I think. Without having at least one of both genders, I wouldn't know what my truest standards to be heroic could even be. Growing up, FRAN DRESCHER was one of my biggest heroes. She was so effusive, elegant and hilarious. Her panache taught me that being a raucous weirdo was cool as long as you were chic and had pure intentions. If I didn't idolise her, I'd be a lesser man. A much lesser man. And that thought makes me happy. I'm a bit suspicious of any man who doesn't admire at least one woman in a way where he doesn't necessarily want to bed or wed her. Consider the lives and times of: Pakistani hero and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhuto American political figure, diplomat and activist Eleanour Roosevelt Parisian wartime chanteuse Edith Piaf. Read about their lives on Wikipedia. Ask yourself these questions: 1. What did they achieve? 2. Did you know their names well before? 3. Could their nations have been the same without their contributions? 4. Why would they not be as famous as Gandhi? 5. Do you want to learn more about them? 6. What do you think gender relations were like in their time? 7. As a man or a woman in 2024, can you imagine having their ambition? 8. What can you learn from their lives? 9. Write down ten qualities that you think they had that you wish you had. 10. Write down these ten qualities in your diary. Try to embody 2 of them each day. Review the list at the end of each day and remember these women. Did you let them down? There could be no one as heroic as the women I idolise: Men simply didn't have the hard lives they had. Their accomplishments are so profoundly epic to me. If only because as a man I have no idea what they experienced. But I'm glad Adele thinks we have come a long way. I'd be worried if we hadn't. Do we see the progress? It can be disheartening to ignore progress. You feel helpless if you think things are beyond help. So, if we aren't helpless. In 2024: How do we help?

Promote for talent or hire for character? Too often, companies promote people because they perform well. They look for talent who can do the tasks they need to be done now. They focus on the current know-how or expertise. The reality: Too many people are promoted because they've been there for a long time. It's the "norm". It's "easy". The consequence: People inherit bad managers. This impacts well-being, mental health, work satisfaction, engagement, connectedness but also productivity, and revenue. What Adele said can be applied in the workplace: Talent can't decide how you treat people, it doesn't have a moral compass. Talent cannot read a room. You can be the most talented person on the planet and only make bad decisions. And to be honest, talent is kind of random. ... Character is observed. It is witnessed. Character is taught and it's passed down. Next time you promote or hire someone, prioritise what the character brings to the table. Go beyond the responsibilities checklist. See people for their potential and how placing them in a role will elevate the team's well-being, engagement, and productivity. #teamwork #talentperformance #talentmanagement #hire #promote
