Here are 5 myths about homelessness as suggested by Rest Less UK. Here are the truths: 1. Homelessness includes rough sleeping, sofa surfing, temporary accommodation, sleeping in a car - not just on the streets. 2. ALL homeless people have a story and are homeless for many, many reasons including relationship breakups and no-fault evictions. 3. Homeless people can't get a job - it is illegal to employ someone without a fixed address - they need support first. 4. If you were made homeless, would you know where to go for help? Homeless people need to be reached - that's why we suggest using www.thestreetlink.org.uk to let our outreach teams know where to find them to offer support. 5. Homeless people are no more dangerous than those with homes - they are more vulnerable and need our help. Today marks the first day of National Homelessness Week. Did you know that, in Australia, there are over 122,494 people experiencing homelessness on any given night? - The main causes of homelessness are family and domestic violence (52%) and a lack of affordable housing (28%). - Only 6% of those experiencing homelessness are visibly sleeping rough. The majority are hidden, residing in crisis accommodation, insecure housing, overcrowded homes, or couch surfing. Please use this week to reflect on ways you could help to diminish these statistics 💙 #endhomelessness #2024NationalHomelessnessWeek #seetheneed #makeadifference #withoutprejudice

3 Myths about homelessness in Australia... MYTH 1: Our homeless community is middle-aged men * Homelessness can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or gender. Women make up 44% of our homeless and over 17,600 are children under 12 years old. MYTH 2: Homeless people sleep on the street * Only 6% of the homeless are sleeping rough. The majority experience 'hidden homelessness', including couch surfing, homeless shelters, or sleeping in cars. MYTH 3: Being homeless is a choice * Domestic violence is one of the main reasons people seek help from a homeless service such as 3rd Space. Every week, women across Australia, often with children, escape abusive partners with nowhere to go and no other option. HOMELESSNESS WEEK 2024 Did you know that homelessness is not "rooflessness"? Only 6.2 per cent of people without a home are sleeping rough. The majority of homelessness is hidden - people in crisis accommodation, rooming houses, insecure housing, overcrowded dwellings or couch surfing. And one in five people experiencing homelessness are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people (ABS Census 2021). Currently, 295 people a day are turned away from homelessness services as they are overstretched, with 80% of those being women and children, which is why this year’s Homelessness Week theme is Homelessness Action Now. Our Remote Laundries project is proud to offer FREE laundry services – an important way to restore dignity to those sleeping rough and to help address the health issues associated with overcrowding. Behind every Remote Laundries project cycle is a person who is able to show up to work with dignity wearing freshly laundered clothes or a child who attends school with pride in a clean uniform. Great to hear the Minister for Housing and Homelessness, the Hon Claire O’Neil MP, launch Homelessness Week 2024 at the Homelessness Australia online forum today. Congratulations to Ms O’Neil on her new appointment. Homelessness Week aims to build community support and government commitment to end homelessness. This year’s theme is ‘Homelessness Action Now’. Domestic and family violence plays a key role in homelessness - it's the leading cause among women and girls. The latest data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reveals that a growing number of women and children who have experienced domestic and family violence and sought assistance from homelessness services, are sleeping rough, or in cars, or couch surfing after receiving homelessness support (Homelessness Australia)*. Additionally, a lack of suitable housing can be a reason a person returns to a person using violence. This is why we're committed to expanding our Sanctuary crisis accommodation for people escaping family and domestic violence. There’s so much more work to be done to prevent homelessness caused by family and domestic violence through therapeutic wrap-around support. The Sanctuary model evaluation is showing great results in achieving better outcomes. Did you know that in the NT homelessness rates are 12 times the national average, people sleeping rough rates are 14 times the national average, and there is an overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Mission Australia is one of several organisations in the NT supporting and empowering people who are experiencing homelessness. Mission Australia's Integrated Homelessness Supported Accommodation Program (IHSAP) in partnership with Yilli Rreung (and funded by NT Govt) supported nearly 600 people in 2023 experiencing homelessness. From feedback from our clients we know what we do is good ...but we want that 'good' to be even better. That's why we commissioned an evaluation of IHSAP and would like to share https://lnkd.in/gEnfWrtF Ana Aitcheson Brent Warren Mission Australia Rachel Christie Territory Families, Housing and Communities

What is homelessness? Homelessness is a broad term which can mean many things. Often the first thing which pops into people’s heads is seeing rough sleepers on the street. However, homelessness also encompasses living in temporary accommodation, sofa surfing, or being otherwise insecurely housed. This is often known as being ‘hidden homeless’. Nobody becomes homeless by choice and there are many reasons why people experience homelessness. Our Street Health Team are available each day to help people experiencing homelessness with healthcare, well-being support, and providing a friendly face that people can trust. If you are worried about a rough sleeper or you are experiencing homelessness in one of its many forms, you can contact us for help and advice https://lnkd.in/evekhCya

In the last decade, homelessness has surged by a staggering 54%. Let that sink in. For many, Christmas is a season of joy and celebrations but it's crucial to acknowledge that not everyone shares these views. For the homeless, this season is exceptionally tough. This Christmas, as we gather with loved ones, let's remember that the gift of a home is the most cherished present. It is important to recognise the vital role housing associations can play in helping to build foundations for more secure futures whilst gradually addressing homelessness. Working within Housing Associations is a powerful way to make a difference, transform lives and help provide stability. If you feel driven to make an impact, consider exploring roles in Housing Associations. When you support Llamau, you support our work in giving someone a place to call home. Somewhere, they can feel safe. We believe that's a right, not a privilege. Unfortunately for thousands of young people across Wales, homelessness has become a frightening reality. Our housing projects give young people somewhere safe to call a home when they have nowhere else to turn. Our supported accommodation projects are small and homely, with no more than nine young people living in any one project. Each person has their own private space, and projects have communal living spaces for young people to socialise, watch television and to have fun. We also provide supported lodgings for young people who we think are more likely to thrive in a family environment. The young person is provided with their own room in a private home where they become a household member. Young people are placed with carefully chosen hosts who are given guidance on how to best support the young person living with them. Each of our projects provides so much more than shelter. We ensure that each person receives a tailored support package, enabling them to develop their strengths and overcome the issues that led to them becoming homeless. This holistic support empowers individuals to work towards independent living at their own pace and in a way that suits them.
