Balancing the Scales: Addressing Homelessness in Our Community We recently had a thought-provoking conversation with a Local Authority about the challenges they're facing in addressing homelessness in their community. It's a tough balancing act - they must weigh the needs of residents against the limitations of their budget and resources. As we've seen in the course of our work, our Local Authorities are dedicated to tackling the root causes of homelessness and providing vital support services to those affected. But they know they can't do it alone. The importance of partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and community groups has never been more clear. By collaborating and leveraging our collective strengths, we can create a more supportive and effective network for those in need. Together, we can make a significant difference. Let's work together to make a difference! #Homelessness #LocalAuthority #Collaboration #CommunitySupport #denburylegal

This week we're counting down the top 5 steps for Victoria to make the leap to a society that has ended homelessness. The best (and most cost-effective) way to end homelessness is to stop it from happening in the first place. And one of the key ways to do that is to prevent unnecessary evictions. In Victoria, the Private Rental Assistance Program, the Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program, and TenancyPlus are saving thousands of people from homelessness right now. But demands on these programs far exceed their funding. We need to increase funding to these programs to ensure they work as effectively as possible, saving Victorians from the trauma of homelessness and taking strain off the rest of the homelessness system. Adequate income support from the federal Government also has a vital role to play in ensuring households can meet their basic costs. What's been your experience with eviction-prevention programs? And what steps do you think are needed for Victoria to make the leap to a society that has ended homelessness? We'd love to hear your thoughts, using the hashtag #LeapWeek. #homelessness #endhomelessness #evictionprevention

At the annual State of Homelessness Address, we announced our third consecutive year of reductions in homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, including the lowest total number of people experiencing homelessness in nearly a decade. 👏 According to the 2024 Point-in-Time count, a total of 3,718 individuals are experiencing homelessness on any given night in Dallas and Collin counties. That equates to a 19% reduction in overall homelessness and a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness since 2021. The strategic moves we’ve made as a community are showing results! But we still have work to do. Our community must continue investing in these effective solutions that will house more neighbors experiencing homelessness with the wraparound support they need to rebuild their lives. Today we kicked off Homelessness Week - ‘Homelessness Action Now’ by hosting an internal Haven Home Safe event discussing the challenges, misunderstandings and successes of working to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. In addition to being awestruck by the incredible work of our staff a few key action themes emerged: 💙 We cannot do this alone. Often the best client outcomes are the result of formal and informal partnerships and community support to deliver outcomes. 💙 Advocacy makes a difference. Our councils, state and federal governments are listening to us. We heard examples of community support resulting in change such as local planning permits changing to support homeless families. It is up to each of us to shout from the rooftops about issues that impact the communities we live in and to raise issues with government bodies working to make a difference. 💙 The current system (without access to sufficient social housing) is causing more trauma and delaying outcomes. While we wait to build more homes, we need some flexibility in how we (and other services) deliver support to people with complex needs. Despite the challenges, the passion and dedication of our staff could not be clearer. We are so proud of the work our staff do and taking the time to reflect on this was a great way to start Homelessness Week.

Homelessness is a very serious issue in the City of Seattle and across King County, with African Americans making up a disproportionate number of people seeking shelter and permanent housing. Africatown Community Land Trust, or ACLT, based in Seattle’s Central District, is a community-based organization confronting this issue head-on. Located on 16th and Yesler, the Benu Community Home, operated by ACLT, opened in December 2021 and is a low-barrier enhanced shelter for single adult males. Just a few weeks ago, ACLT celebrated Benu Community Day. The day served as a rallying call to showcase the impact of Benu Community Home and, to unveil the Benu Impact Report, which detailed the transformative work being done to uplift unhoused Black men in Seattle and King County. As the city grapples with a homelessness crisis—where nearly 30% of the unhoused population are Black despite making up less than 7% of the total population—Benu Community Home stands as a lifeline for change. The Benu Report detailed a holistic approach to not just providing shelter, but creating a foundation for renewal, support, and empowerment. Benu’s model transforms lives by offering a safe space to heal, build community, and reclaim opportunity. This segment was produced by Kennesha Poe-Buycks, Carlos Imani, and The Elite Collective for Back2Besa and originally aired on October 5th on FOX 13 Seattle. Today marks the beginning of Homelessness Week, a critical time for us at the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria to raise our voices and shine a light on the pressing issue of homelessness here at home. Just a few days ago, we gathered at Parliament House to amplify our advocacy efforts and demand change. Our dedicated team at VincentCare Victoria joined forces with the Victorian Homelessness Network (VHN) and called for urgent action to increase social housing. With 60,000+ households on the social housing waitlist and numbers rising, VHN is pressing State and Federal Governments to commit to building at least 60,000 additional social homes. As a powerful symbol of this campaign, 60,000 origami houses were folded, and 6,000 of them were displayed at Parliament of Victoria to represent just 10% of the homes urgently needed. This campaign urges a commitment to construct the required social homes and implement a 10-year national plan to end homelessness. How can you help? In Charlotte, we're witnessing a critical challenge that touches the heart of our community — the rising tide of homelessness. This year, we're turning our focus toward understanding and addressing the complexities of housing instability in our city. Insights from the 2023 State of Housing Instability & Homelessness report by Mecklenburg County Community Support Services have been eye-opening: ⬆️ The count of individuals facing homelessness in our community is on the rise. ⬆️ An increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness without shelter. ⬆️ People are spending more time in emergency shelters than before. The availability of affordable rental options is dwindling. ⬆️ An increasing number of low- and moderate-income families are finding it hard to secure and maintain housing. ⬆️ The rate of evictions is climbing. Charlotte, we're curious to hear your thoughts. Were you aware of these issues? Do these findings surprise you? More importantly, how can we come together as a community to support those in need and find sustainable solutions to these challenges? Let's start the conversation and more importantly, let's start taking action. If you're ready to make a difference or want to learn more about our involvement and what you can do, let's talk. Together, we can make a change. #charlottecommunity #housinginstability #homelessnessawareness #takeaction #strataimpact

Each year Homelessness Australia set a theme for Homelessness Week and this year it is ** Homelessness Action Now ** In the lead up to finalising our events program for Homelessness Week 2024, we have been considering what this theme could mean and how we can collectively and collaboratively create action. We also encourage our sector peers and allies to consider the same moving forward. Also, if you are a homelessness service provider in Western Australia and you are considering applying for funding for a Homelessness Week event, project or initiative through our Grant Program this year, keep this years theme in mind when defining your concept and vision for what you wish to host or collaborate with others to host. It's an important question to consider. #HomelessnessWeek #HomelessnessWeek2024 #HomelessnessWeekWA #HomelessnessWeekFunding #HomelessnessWeekGrantProgram
