It’s a Lovely Day in Internal Audit having Lunch with the CE but isn’t this also a problem? How Independent would Internal Audit be. If they had a concern the CE didn’t share to whom would they report it? In the ‘Good Ole Days of Sydney and Southwestern Area Health Servce under former CE Michael Wallace, Internal Audit Audit reported to the Board - independently of the CE. Like many other areas of NSW Health this potential protection has been removed. I am sure everything is hunky dory but what would happen if it wasn’t? We have seen the problems in the consulting industry at PwC , KPMG and many others when Consulting Services are mixed with Audit and Risk. When someone with the seniority of Brendan Lyon can have their life and career shredded by speaking up, what chance would these enthusiastic members of Internal Audit have to speak up? Associate Professor Andy Schmulow has added passion and clarity to these sorts of issues outside of Health. NSW Health keeps a firm foot on the neck of the Health Districts, the LHD Boards don’t get in the way - is the kindest interpretation of their role. Pseudogovernance at best - We have Status Garling Minus in New South Wales and we needed more than this. Health Minister Ryan Park MP is saying all the right things but he cannot reform NSW Health and they dont want the music to stop. The Premier Chris Minns needs to lead this - the sage advice of Attorney General Michael Daley would come in handy. 6th April 2024 was a mind blowing and eyes opening session with Madam Agnes Igoye, Young Professional Mentorship Program (YPMP) Chief Mentor and Founder. It was a privilege to listen and learn from her in one of the session by #YPMP on “Professionalism”. Ms. Agnes Igoye, the Regional Immigration Expert to the eight (8) member states, with a wide knowledge, skills and experience across various fields specifically at the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). With her opening quote “If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased” (Katherine Helpbum). She stressed a professionalism as the conduct, aims, or quality that characterize/ make a profession or professional person. She expressed the importance of professionalism, how to develop and practice professional; a)     Need to be productive and value the importance of using your time rightly while at work. Maintain a good time management practice and handle tasks on time. b)     Practice positive attitude, humility and always maintain effective work habits which portrays a professional image.   c)     Make friendship and be mindful of who your friends are. Create friendship with people you can learn from. Get to know what friends are for, Are they supportive? Do they add value to your life? Life is about friendship to keep you in line. Ms. Igoye encourages one to always learn from professionals who knows more than you do as well as choosing the right network of professionals. As my son and I watched and celebrated Abbott’s nutritional partner, Real Madrid’s success in the UCL final last night, I couldn’t help but reflect on how sports has so many lessons to offer in our daily lives. Real Madrid were under pressure almost throughout the first half, with their opponents missing a flurry of clean chances and breaking their defence multiple times. Yet they came back strongly in 2nd half and looked a different team. They converted the few chances they crafted, and eventually turned out almost comfortable winners. Morale: In our personal and professional lives, we often have our backs to the wall. All seems lost and going down the drain. Learning is to have the ability to absorb pressure for extended periods and go through tough times with calmness, composure; being secure and self-confident. Give yourself a physical and mental break if need be, come back strongly with a thought-out plan; and when opportunities are presented, make the most of them. Further, no shame in acknowledgment of being lucky as last night’s winners were in first half. Luck is a divine present and no need to be apologetic about it. As they say, luck is when opportunity meets preparedness. Embrace the opportunity, be prepared to take full advantage of it, and celebrate the victory at end of day!
