The Allied Health Researcher of the Year is recognised for their exemplary contributions to research that enhance allied health practice and services in NSW Health. Their impactful research activities contribute to consumer-centred improvement in clinical care or health service delivery and are translatable into practice. They also empower and upskill allied health clinicians in research, fostering a culture of learning and leverage NSW Health's world-class structure which is designed for impact and innovation. The 2025 Allied Health Researcher of the Year Award will be announced on the 27th of March, swipe to meet last year's recipient of the Allied Health Researcher of the Year Award. Clinical Associate Professor Sharon Carey is renowned for clinical nutrition research within complex gastrointestinal disorders. She has more than 70 publications and is an invited speaker internationally. Within her role, Sharon provides leadership to support and encourage clinicians to carry out research, including allied health, nursing and junior medical clinicians. She has supervised more than 50 masters research projects and four PhD students. Sharon has also developed a research skills and mentoring program for allied health clinicians within her Local Health District. Have you heard about NSW Health’s Sustainable Futures Innovation Fund (SFIF)? The fund provides $20,000 to $50,000 to support NSW Health staff-led innovation projects that improve patient care and reduce our environmental footprint. In 2024 HealthShare NSW’s Laundry Electrification Program was awarded $25,000 to convert NSW Health’s laundry services from gas to electric. Receiving the SFIF grant was a huge milestone as it provided funding for a feasibility study to implement the project. “Our linen service is the largest gas consumer in the NSW Government.” “By transitioning from gas-powered equipment to electric alternatives, we can significantly reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system," said Shadi Batarseh, Engineering, Facilities and Assets Manager for Linen Services. Shadi aims to be an industry leader, hoping to set a model for others in the sector to follow. Applications are open for the 2025 Sustainable Futures Innovation Fund. The Aboriginal Allied Health Professional of the Year is honoured for their exceptional commitment, professionalism, and compassionate care. They are committed to improving and advocating for culturally appropriate healthcare for Aboriginal peoples and communities. They also contribute to the growth and development of the Aboriginal allied health workforce in NSW Health. The 2025 Aboriginal Allied Health Professional of the Year Award will be announced on the 27th of March, swipe to meet last year's recipient of the Aboriginal Allied Health Professional of Year Award. Simone Owen is a proud Gomeroi woman who is working on Gamilaraay/Gomeroi and Awabakal Country in Hunter New England LHD. Simone is a speech pathologist in rehabilitation who provides management and care for both inpatients and people living in the community with communication and swallowing impairments. Simone is also a researcher and educator who is committed to ensuring all First Nations people accessing her health service receive culturally responsive care.
