Top execs receiving six figures for not working any more, while frontline workers get paid less than the living wage for some of the most challenging work, seems to be another example of the charity sector upholding the excesses and inequalities of the commercial sector. !!! What I dont understand is this… you want a CEO to be extremely experienced, effective, efficient, and capable? You want a NFP CEO to be all this but not able to be compensated for their expertise, experience, and overall bad-ass-get the job done attitude? You can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s not 1980. If people take on the role to better the world they deserve to be compensated. Do we not pay our government folks well? There are for-profit CEO’s that make 1 million plus. There are more billionaires in the world now than ever and you can’t own a home unless you make 250k or more. People do good work, pay them for it. It still blows my mind that there are some NGO’s who offer jobs for 40k/year and less. Minimum wage should be illegal. The FOR profit companies should be fined for not paying living wages to the folks who make them super rich. People all deserve to eat, keep a roof over their heads, and have children. 😡

Dear CTV News It is disheartening to witness the perpetuation of antiquated and harmful perspectives regarding the charitable sector. This sector stands as a significant contributor to Canada’s GDP and plays an integral role in our social infrastructure, necessitating sophisticated business skills and practices. The responsibility borne by this sector demands the attraction and retention of top-tier talent, not solely reliant on individuals motivated by "passion." Why should those in need be served by anything less than the best and brightest minds? If your intent is to initiate a dialogue about compensation in the charitable sector, it is imperative to conduct comprehensive research and present a balanced view. Numerous articles and research papers advocate for the professionalization of this sector, enabling it to compete for talent on par with the private sector. I find it regrettable that such an important conversation has been approached in a manner that lacks depth and balance. I urge a reconsideration of journalistic responsibility in addressing this critical matter. Do better!

As an educator, I regularly champion the nonprofit sector as an industry for students to consider working in. The most consistent concern I hear from students is whether the industry is competitive with wages. The answer: it's often not, and articles like these perpetuate a harmful narrative about the sector. The salaries listed in this article pale compared to the for-profit sector and often come with burnout: the average tenure of a development director in Canada is 18 months (!!), and 80% of the sector comprises female staff. To retain and attract talent who can run a national organization, you need to be competitive- full stop - and donors want the organizations they support to be successful, to make an impact, and to be governed appropriately. Perhaps my favourite part about this article is that they didn't interview a donor... and instead interviewed folks who said: "It would be preferable to look for people for such organizations who are motivated by a calling rather than by ambition." I can promise that everyone working in the nonprofit space cares about the cause and mission. They'd also like to be competitively compensated.

CTV is perpetuating a damaging argument that employees of non-profit organizations should work for low wages. This is nonsense. The ability of non-profits to attract and retain employees is compromised by low wages relative to other private and public sector organizations. There is no reasonable argument for starving this sector of talent. We need top talent in our non-profit sector.

Volunteers Week 2024 🫶🏼 This week is National Volunteers Week -time for us to celebrate the amazing contribution people make to the community. 🙌🏽 Volunteering was a gift to me after I moved abroad. It is something embedded in Western societies: it is made a lot more accessible and possible than it was in Hungary (maybe just life struggle was too draining, or I was too young and didn't care to do it? not sure). Either way, volunteering became a big part of my life since 2015. A few great experiences I had, just in case you need ideas: - Sundays in Durrell Zoo: I truly miss being surrounded by animals🐻, cleaning up their areas💩, food prep, or manning butterfly house 🦋 - Bat monitoring: I fell in love with bats big time while in Jersey, so recording their sounds and monitoring bats was a great experience 🦇 -Water testing in Citizen Science Program in Jersey: shocking but hugely important results... Let's not even mention water quality and sewage spillage going on in UK (disgrace)💩 - Sussex Wildlife Trust: I enjoy the HIT squad days clearing hedges, wood chopping, planting native wildflowers or litter picking🚯 - Brighton Permaculture Trust: orchard planting in hail and gale force wind wasn't on my list but I did enjoy it nevertheless! 🍎🌳 - Parkrun: the thing is I am NOT a runner, just tackling a beginners-course, but I either join as marshal (cheering) or tail-walker.🏃🏽♂️➡️ - I try and join lot of beach cleans organised by Leave No Trace, Marine Conservation Society, the Sussex Dolphin Project (their boat trips are fab by the way, if you haven't been yet!) 🐬 I know a lot of people who help other charities, support wonderful initiatives and are doing great things. Huge thank you to all of those who dedicate time and effort to volunteer!👏🏼 Share your volunteering experiences- maybe someone else is just looking for inspiration. Volunteering actually helped me hugely when I struggled with my mental health: so can highly recommend it as a remedy. Many people working in the nonprofit sector have seen CTV News recent article disparaging charities who are compensating CEOs $200,000 and above. To say that I am disappointed by this outdated, misguided journalism is an understatement. Before I get into the reasons why this messaging is detrimental to the economy and society let’s start with the facts. Nonprofits contribute $192 billion dollars in economic activity to Canada annually. Nonprofits employ 2.4 million people (1 in 10 Canadian workers). Nonprofits contribute 8.3% of Canada's GDP. Nonprofits in Canada have 13 million volunteers give close to 2 billion hours per year. Nonprofits in Canada workforces are represented 77% by females. Nonprofits in Canada workforces are made up of 47% immigrants and 35% Indigenous and racialized people. Now here are the facts about Canada’s leading CEOs (top 100) working in the private sector. Private sector CEOs (top 100) were compensated on average $14.9 million in 2022. The top paid Canadian CEO made $151 million in 2022. Canada’s top 100 private sector CEOs are overwhelmingly male and white. This underlying belief that people in the nonprofit sector should be solely working because of “passion” and the “goodness of their heart” is nonsense. Yes, most people in the nonprofit sector are driven by impact but the concept that they should be continually compensated below market value is insulting. Plus it has undertones of a sexist and racist belief system considering who makes up the nonprofit workforce. CEOs of nonprofits are expected to have the same qualifications as those working in the private sector, work the same demanding hours, manage up to hundreds (if not thousands) of employees, convince people to volunteer their free time so the work gets done, and solve complex problems that governments can’t seem to fix. All while being paid the very minimum. It’s no wonder why most of the university students I speak to don’t want to work in the nonprofit sector. Or why I see so many high achieving leaders leave for the private sector. It makes sense. Thankfully, the opinion of nonprofit compensation is changing (especially in the US); however, articles like CTV News are perpetuating an old viewpoint and keeping the sector down. If you are not convinced of my argument I recommend watching Dan Pallotta’s TEDx talk “The way we think about charity is dead wrong” or better yet read the book “Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential” before commenting.
