🌟 Reflecting on the First Five Days Post-Career: A Journey of Discovery and Dreams 🌟 As I stepped away from my professional routine, a routine that defined my days for years, the initial sense of being 'idle' was somewhat disorienting. The sudden quiet after the storm of daily responsibilities left me feeling unexpectedly adrift. Yet, this silence brought an opportunity—a chance to dive deep into my journals and reflections that have been companions of my thoughts and ideas over the past three years. What a journey it has been! 📔✨ During this time, I've rediscovered not only the gratitude I hold for each moment spent caring for my patients but also an underlying frustration that echoed through my entries. Despite the joy and satisfaction derived from impacting individual lives, there lingered a consistent yearning—to influence broader systemic change in healthcare delivery and improve outcomes on a larger scale. 🔍 As I reflect and journal more during these days of introspection, one thing becomes increasingly clear: my commitment to healthcare is evolving. It's not just about treating patients anymore; it's about transforming the system. My dream is to shift from making a difference one patient at a time to impacting the entire fabric of healthcare delivery. As I continue on this journey of self-discovery and professional evolution, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Here's to new beginnings, to dreams that push us forward, and to the courage to pursue them. Let's reshape the future of healthcare together. 💪🏥 #CareerChange #HealthcareInnovation #Reflections #NewBeginnings

Supporting doctors to work out what to do with their career so that they can get back to enjoying life. 1:1 coaching and workshops.
R is for readiness. Felt miserable in your medical career for a while, keep on thinking about making some changes but then keep on concluding that you’re not quite ready? 🤔 That your next bit of annual leave, that new qualification, some hot tips on time management, will make all the difference. That maybe if you just sit it out for a bit longer, the pressures inherent within the system will somehow miraculously sort themselves out. One of the biggest tips I would give you (& wish I had known myself when I was in this situation) is to start exploring your options BEFORE you feel ready. Because, truthfully, you will never feel 100% ready. Just like you didn’t on your first day on the wards. And your mind is more invested in drawing your attention to the short-term discomfort associated with choosing to make some changes, regardless of size, than to the longer-term discomfort of choosing not to make any changes. Meanwhile, life is whizzing on by, and you don’t get this time back. So, if you don’t feel ready and would like a free, no-obligation chat, drop me a message or link to my calendar is in the comments. #readiness #takeaction #changes #careerdirection #nhs

Working with senior hospital clinicians to help them prevent burnout so that they can rediscover balance and joy at work.
Looking at Your Day Under a Microscope As healthcare professionals, our days are often a blur of EPR, rounds, procedures, and documentation. The relentless pace can leave us feeling depleted, struggling to find moments of joy or fulfillment in the daily grind. But what if we paused, took a step back, and examined our day under a microscope? Sometimes it's the smallest details, the briefest interactions, that harbor beauty and remind us why we embarked on this noble path. It could be the warm smile and heartfelt "thank you" from a patient on the pain round. That fleeting second when you grasped a difficult concept that had previously eluded you. Or the satisfying click of completing one more item on your to-do list. These infinitesimal bright spots are so easy to overlook when we're laser-focused on checking boxes and making it to the end of our shift. But if we practice being mindful, we can train ourselves to recognize and savor these tiny pockets of success and fulfillment throughout each day. It's how we rewire our perspective, tempering the constant deluge of stress and burnout with an appreciation for the privileged role we play in our patients' lives. It's how we remind ourselves that our work has profound meaning, even when the chaos threatens to obscure that truth. So I challenge you to be on the lookout for your microscopic joys today. Pause, take a breath, and let them recharge your spirit, even if just for a moment. Remind yourself why you embarked on this noble calling in the first place. We have the most demanding yet meaningful jobs in the world. Don't let the bigger picture get lost in the daily grind. Find your microscopic joys, and let them be the lens that brings everything else into focus. If you're struggling to find those bright spots or regain your sense of professional satisfaction, I'm here to help. As a clinician and life coach, I work with healthcare professionals like you to rediscover joy in medicine and achieve the rewarding career you envisioned. DM me if you need someone in your corner.

Supporting doctors to work out what to do with their career so that they can get back to enjoying life. 1:1 coaching and workshops.
Are you feeling mired in back-and-forth arguments as to what to do in your medical career? 😩 Know that something needs to change, but your mind keeps throwing in reasons as to why you should actually just sit tight and do nothing? It’s confusing, isn’t it? 😣 Imagine having a very clear picture of what you would really like instead of the current status quo. You may not yet be completely clear on this – and it’s a lot easier to move forwards when you work this out. 👉 Imagine knowing how to effectively explore the ways to turn what you want into reality, without feeling underwhelmed or overwhelmed by the options. And feeling confident in managing the counter-arguments that your mind will inevitably throw in along the way. 💡 Imagine getting back your headspace and energy so that you can crack on with enjoying life. This is the work I do with doctors, so that they can feel confident in making good choices and not be held back by fear of making a mistake or regret. 😅 So, if you’re feeling stuck and want more than this from life, drop me a message. You just need to be committed to making some changes, small or big, and I will support you all the way. 🙌 #doctors #medicalcareers #careerdirection #lifedesign #generalpractitioners

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: 𝐀 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 In a world of opportunities and challenges, how do you ensure that your decisions lead you not just to success, but to meaningful and sustainable achievements? The answer may lie in a method I learned as a Healthcare Professional where the stakes are high, and the margin for error is slim. This method, known as the triple check, involves verifying the right dose, the right person, and the right route before administering medication. Imagine applying this level of diligence to your personal and professional lives. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: The Right Dose Success starts with setting the right goals. But what constitutes the "right" goal? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: The Right Person In the context of administering medication, verifying the right person is crucial to avoid potentially life-threatening errors. When translating this to your life, it prompts the question: Are you the right person for the goals you have set? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: The Right Route Choosing the correct route is about more than just reaching your destination; it's about how you get there. Whether it's striving for a better work-life balance or pursuing a significant income milestone, the strategies and methods you employ are critical. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 How do you put this into practice? Start by applying the triple-check method to your next goal. Evaluate if it's the right dose (goal), if you're the right person (self-assessment), and if you've chosen the right route (strategy). As you navigate the complexities of your personal and professional growth, draw inspiration from the precision and care demonstrated by Nursing Professionals. By adopting the triple-check method, you can pursue your ambitions with confidence, knowing that you have diligently assessed the dose, person, and route. This is not just about achieving success; it's about ensuring that your success is meaningful, sustainable, and aligned with your deepest values and aspirations. #TripleCheckSuccess #RightDoseRightPersonRightRoute #StrategicLiving #PathToSuccess

This interview with Dr. Larissa May, MD, MSPH, MBA , a very inspiring member of the 2002 cohort of my classmates from the School of medicine and Health Sciences The George Washington University, is packed with so many amazing insights. It is a joy to see her journey, and how much it matters to have #supportiveleadership . I can think of several opportunities that may have led to significant change in my own career where in her case leadership was supportive, and in mine actively antagonistic to change/new ideas. Leading to a discussion of what happens when innovative thinking is stifled, that creativity is frequently marginalized or ends up in the private sector. Dr. May’s insights here give us an actionable list to embrace and nurture change in medical culture, to promote innovation both within and in partnership with private sector institutions. She also provides insight into the value of staying, through the difficulties of growing pains. Enjoy the podcast, and please share your own thoughts. What would you add to your “wish list”? What experiences have you had, either constructive or unproductive. Let’s make this dialog a priority. #changeisconstant and #shapingthefuture is something we all have a stake in. #letscollaborate and #bethechange. Then we will all have our interests considered. Change is much easier with #psychologicalsafety and #stakeholderbuyin. If we don’t initiate innovation, someone else will do it for us. Think of the #EMR. Let ‘s not have a redo of that debacle.
How do you envision strategic breaks, like sabbaticals? And how might they play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare and driving improvements in the industry? Full disclosure, I haven't taken a sabbatical...yet. This riveting episode of AHI Show welcomes Dr. Larissa May, MD, MSPH, MBA, Assistant Clinical Ventures Officer at UC Davis Health Ventures Office. Against traditional paths, Dr. May took a unique "sabbatical," an extended break from her usual work to experience different sectors and generate fresh ideas. She stepped outside of the everyday clinical world, immersing herself in innovation and entrepreneurship - and she's sharing all about it with us. Upon her colleague's advice that "good leaders need to stay and make changes in healthcare," she decided to play an active role in catalyzing change from within. Please watch this powerful episode, unearthing how Dr. May's resilience and innovative thinking could change the trajectory of healthcare. In what ways do you believe that redefining the traditional sabbatical could benefit the healthcare system and its practitioners? #HealthcareLeadership #innovation #AHIShow #sabbatical #healthcaretransformation
