Koenigsegg's one and only racecar - the CCGT! The car started off as a side project for Christian to fulfill the larger picture of getting into racing. It was built to compete in the FIA GT Championship, complying with all ACO & FIA regulations at time of completion. Unfortunately, just months after completion, during shake-down runs of the car, the FIA changed the regulations for the GT1 class. For one, Carbon Monocoques were no longer allowed. Then the homologation numbers jumped from 20 examples spread out over time, to 350 examples a year. Unable to adhere to the new changes, Koenigsegg has to opt out. Effectively bringing an end to the CCGT project, with only the one car being built. So let's talk about this rare beast. It sported the same base engine found in the CCX, however the superchargers were removed to comply with racing restrictions of the time. They increased the size of the engine from 4.7L to 5.0L to make a race-restricted 600hp. It has a 6-Speed Sequential CIMA transmission driving the power to the rear wheels. The car's body has is made of Carbon Kevlar, weighing in at just 2200lbs (1000kg) before the ballast they was required to go racing. It also makes 1400lbs of downforce. Koenigsegg states that those that have driven it have said the car is a dream to drive and it would have been incredibly competitive. Last year, it went up for auction this at Goodwood Festival of Speed and now has a new home. LEGISLATION: #Hypercar rules to remain until 2029; new #LMP2 pushed back to 2028 Following ratification by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile World Motor Sport Council this week, several regulatory changes to the FIA World Endurance Championship and endurance racing in general were announced at the Automobile Club de l'Ouest press conference, ahead of the 92nd Le Mans 24 Hours this weekend (June 15-16). The key takeaways from the announcement were that the current Hypercar rule set will remain in place until the end of 2029, while new LMP2 rules will now be pushed back until 2028 (instead of the previously mooted 2026). Successful crash test on our 6m racing steel gates for use on FIA Grade 1 racetracks in accordance with "FIA Standard 3502-2018" and "DIN EN 1317"   In addition to concrete barriers and safety fences, all other components of a race track safety system are also subject to the highest demands in the event of a crash. For us, it is therefore a logical conclusion, that the gates of a racetrack should also be part of a tested system. Another special requirement of gates is, that it is necessary to be able to open the gate after a crash, as the gate is both an escape route and an access route for emergency vehicles. For this reason, the gates usability must be fully guaranteed even after a direct impact by a vehicle.   Our highly developed steel gates, whether pedestrian gates, pit lane gates or the 4 metre and 6 metre variants for the track, have all been engineered for this emergency situation.   To prove this, we had a crash test based on the "FIA Standard 3502-2018" carried out on our largest racing steel gate, with an opening width of 6 metres, at crashtest-service.com GmbH in Münster in December last year.   The test looked like this: a vehicle weighing 1 tonne, at an angle of 20° and travelling at 120 km/h crashed into the centre of the gate without braking!   The result:   - our gate held and guided the vehicle back onto the track - the gate was neither destroyed nor irreparably damaged - the gate could be opened immediately and without tools, allowing emergency services to enter the track in the event of an accident - the gate could be brought 100% back into shape and alignment with the concrete barrier, thanks to the adjustment options on the hinges - Ongoing events on the racetrack do not have to be interrupted or even cancelled for a longer period of time for repairs, as there is usually no replacement gate available   A tested gate is another important step towards ensuring the safety of spectators, race track staff and drivers at motorsport events. We have proven with this crash test that you can rely on the safety of our gates! EXCELLENCE (Adrian Newey); many strive for it. We can all learn from those who achieve it. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year I had a lot of fun indulging my interest in motorsport. I was also struck by several examples of true excellence. I thought it would be fun to share one or two this week. Next up... ADRIAN NEWEY Widely regarded as one of, if not the greatest engineer in the history of Formula One, Adrian Newey’s cars have won over 200 Grand Prix, amassing 12 Constructor’s and 13 Driver’s Championships. HOW HAS HE DONE IT? As this article on formula1.com explains, he has been responsible for transformational design evolution and change over the course of a 45 year career to date, impacting design of, for example, aerodynamics, seating position changes that lowered the centre of gravity of the driver (and improved aero’), and exploiting the full potential of active suspension (something pioneered by Lotus, a team that was subject of my previous post). He has a track record of finding opportunity through clever interpretation of new regulations governing design of the race cars. https://lnkd.in/e5CH9YGq WINNING His cars have won with Nigel Mansell in 1992, right up to Max Verstappen last year. In the intervening years, they have enabled Prost, (Jacques) Villeneuve, (Damon) Hill, Häkkinen, and Vettel to win the championship multiple times. All this whilst working for three constructors - Williams Racing, McLaren Racing, and most recently, Red Bull Racing & Red Bull Technology. He has most recently been working on the RB17 hypercar unveiled over the weekend, having moved away from the F1 team, and will be leaving Red Bull altogether in Q1 2025. Who benefits from his design excellence next is still to be confirmed. Silver bullet - the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster! Car Week has come and gone, but it left us with some memorable cars. And this is one of them: CLK GTR Roadster Chassis 3 of only 6 ever made. An example that sold for just North of $10 million at auction in Vegas last year during F1 GP weekend. Boden AutoHaus prepared this example for the owner for Monterey Car Week. Giving it the white glove treatment. A top to bottom treatment, bringing that factory finished Brilliant Silver Metallic to life. A set of HRE Vintage 501 wheels in clear polish were installed to give the car a fresh look. Powering the CLK GTR Roadster is a meaty 6.9L V12 producing around 610hp. That power is sent to the wheels via a 6-speed Xtrac sequential. This was good for a solid 3.8 second 0-60mph and a top speed North of 200mph. Truly a unicorn car. ***Now, to clear up some internet confusion of sorts. No, the CLK GTR did not "take flight" at Le Mans. That was the follow-up CLR racecar that was involved in those incidents. For all intents & purposes, the CLK GTR was a dominant track weapon that won 17 of 22 races it was fielded in, taking home two Driver's Championships and two Constructor's Championships. Various teams that MOTUL partners with, for their lubricant and automotive fluid requirements, will be at this weekend’s Revival meeting.
