📣 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Oncology has made huge strides, not just in prolonging patients' lives, but in significantly enhancing their 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 through better diagnostics, less invasive surgeries, and advanced therapies. However, 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻-related complications, often overlooked, remain a major risk. Recent findings highlight a concerning gap: only a fraction of oncologists feel confident in advising their patients on preventable infections, especially regarding timely 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Fascinating to contemplate which strategy deliver the most benefit. I certainly see a role for this vaccine but also know that patient understanding of this topic is low. Immunizing prospective transplant patients who are negative may make sense. Certainly of value for pregnant patients as well. But interesting to consider the utility of delivery at scale to the “herd” as part of routine immunization to reduce the reservoir of circulating virus/disease. I have multiple patients who I suspect had cCMV that explains their profound hearing impairment and possible other congenital abnormalities.
The next study we're recognizing as part of our 'Stimulating the Science' initiative, our initiative to acknowledge independent, important, peer-reviewed research on #cytomegalovirus (#CMV), is by Suresh Boppana, et al,. which highlights the potential impact of vaccine development on preventing or reducing the disease burden of congenital cytomegalovirus (#cCMV). In this comprehensive #vaccine value profile (VVP), the potential public health, economic, and societal value of CMV vaccines is underscored. Congenital CMV affects an average of 6.7/1000 live births, and can cause birth defects and developmental disabilities like sensorineural hearing loss and motor disabilities. The also study delves into global CMV prevalence, emphasizing the need for tailored vaccine strategies to address the varying disease burdens worldwide. We thank this working group of subject matter experts from academia, public health groups, policy organizations, and non-profit organizations for this VVP, and for detailing the state of knowledge and identifying the current gaps in CMV vaccine development. Why the Future of Vaccine Trials Depends on Consensus Definitions Respiratory illnesses like RSV are a leading cause of hospitalizations in older adults. Yet, did you know there’s no consensus definition for viral-associated lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) in clinical trials? This gap not only complicates comparisons between vaccine studies but also risks slowing down critical advancements in public health. A recent publication (https://lnkd.in/dASUHbMg) dives deep into this issue, revealing how inconsistent diagnostic criteria lead to fragmented data and decision-making challenges. For example, three FDA-approved RSV vaccines used significantly different definitions of LRTD, impacting how efficacy is assessed. The solution? Establishing a universal standard for LRTD definitions. By uniting researchers, regulatory bodies, and healthcare professionals around a common framework, we can ensure better comparisons, informed decision-making, and ultimately, enhanced protection for vulnerable populations. This call for consensus isn’t just about improving clinical trials—it’s about accelerating progress in combating respiratory diseases globally. Let’s push for greater alignment and collaboration in science. Together, we can set the stage for breakthroughs that truly matter. #RSV #Vaccines #ClinicalResearch #PublicHealth #Innovation

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance , has resumed support for the hepatitis B birth dose vaccine to address critical gaps in infant health worldwide. Given within 24 hours of birth, the hepatitis B birth dose is the most effective way to prevent mother-to-child transmission, reducing the risk of lifelong chronic infection. This vaccination provides immediate protection, especially in high-risk regions with limited healthcare access, and aligns with global health goals to eliminate hepatitis B as a public health threat by 2030. By ensuring equitable access, Gavi’s initiative promotes health equity, lowering future healthcare costs and reducing liver disease risks, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. This action reaffirms that early protection through the birth dose offers every newborn a healthier future, significantly impacting global efforts to reduce hepatitis B infection and liver-related health complications.
