Sustainability isn’t just ideal; it’s profitable. But fear holds many of us back. As an example, in the construction sector, these are the facts about green buildings: 1️⃣ Demand for green buildings up consistently (RICS) 2️⃣ Green certifications yield 6.0% rent premium (World Economic Forum) 3️⃣ 7.6% sales premium for green real estate (RICS) For green building projects, green materials and construction methods are needed. Companies can really get ahead of the crowd by - Analyzing the impact of their products (Life Cycle Analysis) and optimize those - Setting up a solid sustainability strategy for short and long term - Innovating totally new approaches (materials and methods) Sure, it takes some guts to start with this, but the rewards are great - even financially. Where did you take the lead and innovated without fear for more sustainability?

SUSTAINABLE OFF-PLAN PROJECTS ARE GROWING 30% FASTER IN DEMAND – HERE’S THE REASON. Eco-conscious off-plan projects like Sustainable City Yiti are seeing a 30% faster demand growth than traditional developments. I believe this is a shift that will define real estate in the years to come. Buyers increasingly value sustainability, not only for its environmental impact but also for the long-term financial gains in maintenance and energy savings. These aren’t just homes – they’re future-proof investments. As I see it, sustainable projects will soon become the gold standard.

Built around sustainability | Across Sweet Projects, our focus is on ensuring that sustainable options are taken wherever possible – with team members and our partners in the supply chain educated on how to achieve this best. In reality, sustainability in action is ramping up as projects progress from design to construction. In one instance, at Longcross in Chertsey, Surrey, sustainable elements that have been designed into the build, before anybody steps on site, include: - A rainwater harvesting system –an innovative and inbuilt design to reduce water consumption and waste throughout the building lifetime. - Eliminating future diesel use – Incorporating gas back-up generators into design, which will also be hydrogen-ready, helping to reduce the carbon footprint. - Encouraging Electric Vehicle (EV) use – provision of EV charging stations/points in the project for charging reliability, and making the site electric vehicle user friendly. - Creating living walls in design across certain elevations within the building. Andrew Moss, project director at Longcross explains: “As with all our project sites, we take sustainability seriously, and it’s great to see the careful thought and planning of sustainability at the design stage come to life as we progress through the build.” Read more about Longcross here: https://lnkd.in/eDhcyhbx

Have you ever wondered why ‘green compliance’ in construction often feels more like a game of checking boxes than making real, lasting change? It’s a conversation I find myself coming back to again and again, especially after one of our recent projects. We were required to get a sustainability certification—either LEED or Built Green. We chose Built Green - it was cheaper and didn’t force us to make any changes. If we weren’t required to choose a certification, we wouldn’t have done it at all. That’s the reality. Sure, we use Energy Star appliances—but that’s the standard these days. It’s not exactly a groundbreaking move. Here’s the thing: sustainability only works if it makes financial sense. Incentivize sustainable development? We’d gladly trade an extra year in permitting - at least the money would go to a good cause and not funnel cash into bloated government budgets. So, what’s the path forward? How do we make sustainability meaningful—not just another bureaucratic checkbox?

Sustainability comes into virtually every discussion we have with customers today as part of their smart building conversation. Organisations want to reduce their carbon footprint, energy consumption and costs. One piece of advice I’d give to anyone is that the ‘smarts’ need to be factored in at building design stage and constantly fought for. There’s a tendency to remove some of these features to save money, but it’s a false economy. Design for the future and don’t cut corners, otherwise your building will never be as smart as it could be. Tenants won’t be as excited to move into it. And the sustainability benefits for the building and the planet will be compromised. To see more lessons learnt, you can view the whole series at https://lnkd.in/eG_dmsw7
