Global sales of organic food & drink reached EUR 127 billion in 2022. This is 80% growth since 2018. Our research shows that USA has the largest market for organic products, generating almost half of global sales. Denmark has the largest market share for organic products, with 12%. At BioFach last week, we presented the latest market data and trends for the global market. Some of the highlights... - Market growth slowed in 2022 because of macro (economic-political) factors, with declines reported in several European countries. However, overall growth trajectory remains positive. - North America leads in terms of global sales, partly because of higher market growth. Another important factor is strengthening of US dollar in foreign exchange. - Asia and other regions have reported the highest market growth (%) over the last decade. - Low cost retailers, especially discounters, have reported largest rise in market share in recent years. - Organic remains the dominant eco-label in the food industry, however proliferation is occurring with over 200 labels now present. Ecovia Intelligence has been doing continuous research on the global organic & sustainable products market since our formation in 2001. Today's topic: The fully organic dairy. Rørosmeieriet, Norway's only fully organic dairy, has entered the on-the-go market with the introduction of 500 ml sustainable Pure-Pak boxes manufactured from unbleached paperboard. Rørosmeieriet launched the two new flavored milks in 1 liter cartons in March 2023, becoming the first Elopak customer in Norway to use the unbleached, natural brown board. This latest launch in smaller cartons in October is in line with market demands for more convenience. It is also the shift in consumer tastes for less processed foods. Cornucopia offers this list of nationally available, organic brands that are currently independently owned. (Scroll down for list.) These brands are committed to selling only certified organic products. A dwindling number of organic brands are independent—most are owned by large conglomerates. Once acquired by a major food processing company, organic brands tend to become diluted. They may begin to offer non-organic food or source their raw materials from industrialized farms. Sometimes the brand disappears altogether once it has been bought out by Big Food. This project is informed by the important work of Dr. Phil Howard, Michigan State University professor and member of International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems.
