By and large, this is due to the experiences playing out on the battlefield with the Russia-Ukraine War along with the growing reliance on the electromagnetic spectrum for modern systems to function. In real-time, we're seeing modern technologies fielded, defeated, and adapted in a cycle of defense innovation. Saab says it has solved a modern camouflage conundrum You won't be able to see it, though. On September 5, Swedish defense giant Saab announced a new feature for its existing camouflage netting. This netting is thrown over military positions, like artillery equipment or spots where soldiers are waiting in a forest, to conceal them from detection by hostile forces. Modern nettings are designed to hide not just the appearance of what’s underneath, but the radar signatures and radio signals, too, although that can make sending out communications hard. Saab is taking a stab at solving that problem with the “Frequency Selective Surface technology” for its Barracuda Ultra-lightweight Camouflage Screen. The netting, as promised, lets people underneath send out low-frequency radio signals, while preventing them from being seen on radar. #PhoenixDelivers #saab #cammo

Patria has signed two agreements to supply the Patria ARIS electronic intelligence systems (ELINT) to European NATO member countries. With the agreements, customers will have access to the latest version of a high-performance signal intelligence system tailored to the needs of the countries in question. The electronic intelligence system Patria ARIS enables its user to gather information about signals from radars and other radio transmitters used by the opposing party. Patria ARIS system can be used to detect, locate and identify radars and military systems using a radar. The customer can use the system to generate detailed identification information based on radar signals, which is vital in the modern electronic warfare battlefield. “Patria ARIS system is a long-used and highly polished product that provides excellent usability and accurate intelligence in a situation where the capabilities of electronic warfare determine success on many fronts. We are proud to provide two new customers with the latest version of the system and supporting services,” says Executive Vice President Jukka Holkeri, Global Division at Patria. Mastering the basics. This is an oft preached principle (myself included) within the military but rarely defined. - Using a map and compass for land navigation. - Firing artillery or mortars using “charts and darts”. - Shooting without fancy optics. These are a few examples of what mastering the basics means to me. Technology is important and provides distinct advantages…until it doesn’t as this article from May lays out. For the first time since the incorporation of technology into all facets of military operations our systems and capabilities are being tested. We’re finding out that maybe some of our systems may not provide the distinct advantages we thought they would. It’s a cycle of tech development —> enemy finds a way to defeat —> new tech development… The same cycle we saw with IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan only now it’s some of our most advanced weapons systems disrupted by a peer adversary. The answer? Continue to build the next generation of of tech while also maintaining our ability to operate when disrupted. The day will come where even our next generation of tech is disrupted and whoever has the ability to continue operating in highly contested environments will carry the day. *Link to article in comments
