What were the media rights highlights in #SportsBiz over the last seven days?   1. DAZN's Ligue 1 coverage in France will be available through Prime Video in France as an add-on subscription   2. DAZN will also continue to be carried on Canal+ platforms, as will BeIN Sports as pay-TV networks renew carriage deals   3. TelevisaUnivision secures multi-year deal for Spanish language rights to Major League Baseball (MLB) including playoff matchups and game one of World Series   4. Premier Sports Network secures three-year rights deal for Investec Champions Cup and Challenge Cup in UK and Ireland   5. DAZN to broadcast all Serie A Femminile matches in Italy until end of 2026/27 season with Rai airing one game per matchday   6. Serie A finalises rights deals with Saran for 15 territories, including Turkey, and New World TV for 22 African territories until 2029   7. Can public broadcasters compete with private sports broadcasters? Koan’s Vivan Sharan and Srishti Joshi suggest India should adopt global best practices in the Hindustan Times. Some brief audio and textual commentary by me on sport TV and anti-siphoning policy (a cultural citizenship issue). It's a very technical area resistant to the simple solutions proposed by some political parties and media companies. Anyway, don't worry about being cut off from free sport by disappearing aerials. According to Free TV Australia, "Digital terrestrial television (DTT) is available to virtually all Australian households. Free-to-air services reach 99% of the Australian population". And despite the headline, the TV rights to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup were purchased by Optus because at the time the tournament was not on the anti-siphoning list (about which I have loudly complained!). Non-Optus subscribers only saw it because a minority of games were also shown on free-to-air TV, the platform on which 6 out of 7 people watched the Matildas. Most of those who watched it on a streaming service could have watched the Matildas' games on broadcast TV. There are bigger loopholes than not putting streaming on the anti-siphoning list, which is inevitable in the medium term. New stats show that unless broadcasters and advertisers maintain the interest and momentum, viewing stats on women's sport decline. New research by Yonder Consulting looks closely at this - 'The first step for broadcasters is simple - get as many eyeballs on it as possible. Being more consistent with coverage and putting more women’s sports at peak times would be a proactive and morally strategic move, demonstrating their commitment to providing equal opportunities in sport.'
