The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), based at Western Sydney University, is the largest dedicated concentration of socio-cultural researchers in Australia. Located in Parramatta, the Institute is renowned for its evidence-based interdisciplinary research into culture and society in a changing world. We champion collaborative, engaged research in the critical humanities and social sciences, attuned to the power of digital technologies, the importance of changing economies and the impact of ecological crisis. Our research distinguishes itself by recognising the social complexity of the local and global challenges faced by organisations and communities. We aim to offer the knowledge required to navigate this complexity through engaging the public to create positive change towards democracy and sustainability. Congratulations to our very own Daniele Fulvi for being shortlisted for the 2024 Daily Philosophy Global Essay Contest! Daniele’s essay titled “Philosophy and the Climate Crisis: Thinking Clearly to Help Ensure the Future of Humanity”, explores the role of philosophy in addressing the climate crisis, arguing that it should go beyond merely promoting moral education and hope. The main argument of the essay is that philosophy should not be regarded as a discipline promoting moral thinking and fostering hope for the future – but rather as a practice of clear thinking that elucidates the concrete predicament of the climate crisis and informs subsequent appropriate climate action. 🌏 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚! Between August and September 2024, GFAR researchers worked closely with researchers from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) collecting data on the use of digital financial services by men and women in farming households in Battambang, Kampong Cham, and Kandal provinces in Cambodia. Dr Alexandra Peralta, Dr Rida Akzar and Dr Panharoth Chhay from GFAR work closely with Dr Vin Spoann, Dr Rido Thath and Mr Vibol San from RUPP to gain insights on the key drivers of use of digital financial services in Cambodia and how these services are affecting outcomes for farming households, and men and women in particular. This effort marks a critical milestone in the ongoing Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)-funded project, "𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 & 𝐌𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐨𝐬 & 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚 (𝐃𝐢𝐅𝐅).” This research is a collaboration between The Centre for Global Food and Resources, the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) at Western Sydney University, the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) and the National University of Laos. Using Trump’s tweets from January 6 as a case study, Fiona expands curatorial concepts to include overlooked non-human agents. Gerard is a distinguished scholar of international acclaim, recognized for his foundational contributions to our understanding of the key dynamics in contemporary digital media, communications, and culture. He is recognized as a pioneer in mobile communication research, with ground-breaking work on the impact of mobile phones on cultural and social life. Moreover, Gerard is a leading authority on digital inclusion, inequalities, and rights, with a focus on disability, accessibility, and inclusive design. He has authored 24 books and over 200 research papers and chapters, including influential works published in top journals like New Media & Society, The Information Society, and Information, Communication & Society. Well done to Gerard on his outstanding achievements and we look forward to the continued impact of his work in advancing digital equity and innovation.

Last week, I had the honour of announcing members of Western Sydney University’s Professoriate by their Distinguished Professor titles at our annual Professoriate Dinner. It was a great night to acknowledge the standout achievements of Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor George Williams AO, Miles Franklin Award and Stella Prize winner, Distinguished Professor Alexis Wright, and internationally renowned scholar, Distinguished Professor Gerard Goggin. During the dinner, I thanked our Professoriate for the hours they put into our University to ensure it lives its values, mission and purpose. They are the centrepiece of our academic mission, and we are grateful for their contribution.
