"It isn't possible to be fair. We need to focus on being justifiable" That's what I have repeated to three different teams this week. I struggle with understanding what fair means. I am at the point that I almost despise the word, despite all of the theoretic goodness it should bring. What is fair? It harkens back to the Christian parable of the workers in the field. Is it even possible to be universally fair when it involves more than just you and I? Imagine a county fair where there is a pie judging contest. The rules are set to award the winning pie based on a list of 5 well-defined attributes. We all agree that this will give us a representative winner, knowing full well these are all human judges full of any number of potential cognitive biases. We are transparent with all of the judging process and make provisions to remove bias where possible. Yet somehow the winning pie turns out to be controversial and not "fair" by some of the population. Was the result fair? I have no idea, because that word eludes me. Was it justifiable - 100%. I can sleep with that.

Transforming Education: The Revitalization of Dual Enrollment Programs While dual enrollment programs existed, their untapped potential lay dormant, underutilized, and facing challenges that hindered their effectiveness. Recognizing this, our company's CEO, Jazmine Garcia, embarked on a mission to mend and transform these initiatives during their tenure at Foothill College. Their visionary approach went beyond mere adjustments; it was about reimagining what dual enrollment could achieve. Retired Surgeon | Chair Tri Delta Foundation Board of Trustees | Women's Empowerment | Life Sciences | Committed to transforming national healthcare delivery to ensure quality, accessible, affordable care for all
Advocating for freedom of association is crucial, especially for organizations like Greek life, which often provide valuable opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and community service on college campuses. Greek organizations not only offer a sense of belonging and camaraderie but also foster leadership skills, philanthropic endeavors, and academic support systems. These groups contribute positively to campus culture by promoting inclusivity, diversity, and a strong sense of community. By participating in initiatives like the First Amendment Institute, members of organizations like Tri Delta gain a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities as advocates for their organizations and the broader community. This knowledge empowers them to effectively engage in dialogue, promote positive change, and uphold the values of freedom and association. Ultimately, recognizing the value of Greek life and supporting initiatives that empower its members to advocate for their rights ensures that these organizations continue to enrich campus life and contribute positively to society.
Last week, Tri Delta sent three collegiate members, Libby Lester, Texas, Katarina Betris, Jacksonville, and Alexandra Hofmaister, Oregon State, to the First Amendment Institute (FAI) to learn how to advocate for freedom of association on their campuses. Alexandra shared, "I loved my experience and the opportunity to learn more about the impact of our voices on campus, especially as leaders of powerful organizations such as Greek life. My greatest takeaways from this conference were about fair application and ensuring that all actions you take and precedents you make are applied equally within our chapters and on our campuses."

I spent 9 hours a day for the past 7 days deep inside the Kansas City Convention center, reading and grading AP US History exams. Hundreds of them. I’m on the development committee that helps the College Board build the exam, so surely only fair that I see how students respond. Some notes: *The vast majority of the 1000 or so in-person readers are themselves APUSH teachers. They’re great. I myself benefitted from excellent high school history teachers, so it’s great to see that our kids remain in good hands. *The ratio of history joke t-shirts to humans inside that convention center was…extremely high. *Lots of standout exams from outstanding students. Way more sophisticated than I was at 17…or 22…or 30, in some cases. *There are a lot of safeguards against bad or inconsistent or otherwise unfair grading. It’s impressive. If you’re a historian, consider becoming an AP reader. It’s an endurance test for sure, but a great way to chip in for the good of the discipline.
