H-2.5 before the opening ceremony of the Olympics, a very timely period to talk about the importance of aerodynamics in cycling and many other sports. “The wind on the flat is approximately 90% of the total resistance,” says Fred GRAPPE, PhD, head of performance and innovation at Equipe cycliste Groupama-FDJ. As I celebrate 16 years since my first F1 race with Super Aguri at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya in 2008. It's incredible to reflect on the extensive technological changes in F1's IT landscape since then. The evolution of hardware has been nothing short of remarkable, from traditional HDDs to more robust and performant SSDs in team laptops and remote data centres to compact half-rack portable infrastructure. However, the true game-changer over the years has been the extensive adoption of public cloud services, which has paved the way for near real-time data analysis of hundreds of telemetry indices and machine learning for teams and associated sporting bodies. While these advancements are exciting, they raise important questions for the sport: - Given the rapid pace of Big Data, GenAI and ML service deployment, how can the sport effectively manage this within team budgets? - Is the sport setting itself up for another 'runaway innovation' scenario, akin to past engineering breakthroughs that drastically altered the competitive landscape? As we embrace these powerful and invaluable new tools, it's crucial to maintain a level playing field and preserve the spirit of competition that makes F1 so thrilling. I'm all for engineering innovation. However, uncapped use of these technologies may eventually harm a sport, so it warrants discussion. What are your thoughts on balancing technological innovation with fair competition in motorsports? #F1Technology #MachineLearningInSports #CloudComputing #MotorsportInnovation #aws #MachineLearning

An interesting view on big data and cloud services. M365, on a day to day basis, has about 2Bn documents a day added to it. However, a sport like F1, and many others too, generate astonishing amounts of telemetric data, and that data needs to be stored somewhere and that somewhere is typically public cloud. So the question arises as to how you stay on top of such enormous volumes of data, whist keeping it affordable AND meaningful. Question, I think, is going to be how quickly will data become obsolete in this extremely fast developing tech world? And do we need to rethink how much we keep?
