What kind of things are we hearing from our customers at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow? 🛩️
We caught up with our own Tony Karam to find out how our customers are venturing into new areas such as advanced air mobility, navigating international safety standards, and much, much more.

- Hi everyone. I'm Magda Kuczkowska at Ansys at the Farnborough International Airshow. Together with me, Tony Karam,
Ansys Global Systems Director. - It's great to be back at Farnborough. It is my favorite airshow. You know, to get to see all our customers with all the latest technology, and how we're positioning Ansys with all this latest technology. So this is really awesome
to be back at Farnborough. - So that's exciting. Tell me
a little bit more about it. What are the latest
technological advancements you are currently discussing
with our A&D customers? - So, from my point of view, a lot of the customers
I've been talking to are traditional customers,
actually, right? They're now venturing into
advanced air mobility. They're venturing into electrical vertical
takeoff systems, right? Air taxis. A lot of these systems require, you know, advanced navigation, autonomy, that requires maybe AI, ML. They got to have requirements
for new safety, right? Safety is going to be always
the premier requirement in aerospace. We're positioned to help them with safety. We're a part of all the
international standards on safety. So we're positioned to help them with AI. We're positioned to help them
with early concept development and, you know,
multidisciplinary optimization. So Ansys is really in a unique position with our virtual prototyping
now coupled with our new model-based system engineering workflow to really help our customers. - Perfect, Tony, thank you. It seems like there's a perfect moment to deploy much better,
much broader simulation under digital engineering logic, right? What are the Ansys value proposition today and competitive advantage? - Everybody knows Ansys, right? We're the leader in simulation technology. Now we get to take that
simulation technology and bring it to that full
digital engineering thread with model-based system
engineering, MBSE, right? So Ansys now has a complete portfolio on model-based system engineering that looks at requirements
and system architecture and how that architecture,
those requirements, are going to meet, you
know, through simulation, how are they going to
meet these requirements through model-based system engineering, how are they going to meet
some of their safety analysis and their safety requirements. And of course, through the
model-based engineering workflow, how are they going to meet
the challenges of creating DO-178C embedded software. So all of these requirements now for digital engineering and
model-based system engineering, Ansys can leverage a simulation background and all that at the component
design level and bring this up through a model-based
system engineering workflow. - Great, exciting. I
wish you a perfect show, a wonderful conversation
with the customers. - Absolutely. I'm looking to
see all our customers today and start day 2 here ready to go. - Have a great show.
- Yeah, absolutely. - Stay tuned for more coverage from the Farnborough
International Airshow.
The Farnborough International Airshow has commenced, showcasing top executives from the aviation and defense sectors amid ongoing supply chain issues. Two years after emerging from pandemic disruptions, the industry now faces the challenge of meeting soaring demand, with concerns about persistent supply chain problems. The International Civil Aviation Organization predicts that air travel could triple by 2050, raising significant environmental concerns. Airbus, with a backlog of 8,626 orders, contrasts with Boeing's 5,600, as the latter continues to recover from past setbacks. The defense sector also eyes opportunities, bolstered by increased military budgets but facing similar supply chain hurdles. The airshow underscores the sector's need to balance growth with sustainability and operational challenges.

Many are not aware that Air France's first few Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde aircraft were delivered in the airline's pre-1976 livery. Variations of this earlier color scheme had been used for decades by the French flag carrier. It was replaced by what could legitimately be called the very first "Euro-white" look. This is the design the company still uses, in slightly modified form, today. F-BTSC is seen here in the old livery, having been photographed in early 1976 at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. Sadly is was -BTSC which became the first, and only, Concorde to be involved in a fatal crash (in the year 2000 on departure from this very airport). After a long grounding for safety modifications the Anglo-French supersonic transports were returned to service with Air France and British Airways in 2001. The type was then permanently grounded in 2003 due largely to continuing very low load factors during the worldwide air traffic downturn in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington D.C.

The #A330MRTT of Republic of Singapore Air Force 🇸🇬 is getting ready for Singapore Airshow.
#DidYouKnow that #Airbus and the RSAF worked together in 2023 to successfully complete the automatic air-to-air refuelling (A3R) flight test campaign? This involved an A330 MRTT ✈️ and the F-15, as part of a certification process. In addition, night flights were conducted with the F-15s and F-16s, which acted as receivers. The objective was to complete the A3R development and enable night capabilities with the automated system.

Deals worth £13 Billion to the UK aerospace sector were announced at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow. We have significant elements of the major players based in Wales including Airbus, BAE Systems, Thales, GE Aerospace and Raytheon UK and money from those deals will flow into local employment and supply chains. Around 700 sets of wings will be produced this year at the Airbus Broughton plant in Flintshire.
As always we took a group of smaller companies with us on the Wales stand, supported by Welsh Government, some as exhibitors and others using the stand as a base for meetings during the show. An initial estimate suggests that total potential orders for those participants will reach £20 million this year, modest in terms of the sales achieved by the larger companies but vitally important for the smaller companies and the communities they serve across Wales.
