🌟 Member Spotlight: Marilles Foundation 🌟 We're proud to highlight the incredible work of Marilles Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to making the Balearic Islands a global example of marine conservation. Since its inception in 2017, Marilles has invested an impressive €5 million in over 100 marine conservation projects across the Balearic Islands, funded entirely by private donations. Their efforts are focused on key strategic areas, including the creation of Marine Protected Areas, promoting sustainable fishing practices, monitoring species and habitats, and improving water quality. Every euro they receive is channeled directly into local projects, making a tangible difference in the preservation of our marine environment. Marilles Foundation also plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration at regional and national levels, supporting initiatives like the Balearic Sea Report and the MARE audiovisual contest. Their commitment to marine citizen science is evident through the promotion of Observadores del Mar in the Balearics. A $21 million dollar donation to The Nature Conservancy - most likely the single largest donation to buy land in Australian history - has supported the Queensland Government in the purchase of the Vergemont Station in western Queensland. Making an important contribution to Australia’s efforts to protect 30% of lands and 30% of oceans by 2030 (Pathways to 30x30 report), this acquisition will create a conservation corridor of 1.4 million hectares (slightly larger than Yosemite National Park in the United States). The area contains 34 regional ecosystems, including key habitat for the endangered Night Parrot and highly restricted Opalton Grasswren, and protects the headwaters of the Lake Eyre Basin, the source of one of the last remaining free-flowing arid river systems in the world. To help turn this commitment into reality, the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative and Oceana are working to fast-track the creation of new marine protected areas (MPAs) and other conservation measures. A partnership led by the government of Mongolia and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has raised $198 million in commitments towards conservation and sustainable communities, with similar initiatives in up to 20 other countries in the pipeline. Eternal Mongolia aims to create 14 mln hectares of new protected areas in the country’s grasslands, forests, deserts, wetlands, and rivers through a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative that includes $71 mln from private and philanthropic donors. It will strengthen the management of the country’s existing National Protected Areas, covering 47 mln ha, and benefit at least 24,000 households in community-managed practices like sustainable grazing across a further 34 mln ha. “The scale of impact this Eternal Mongolia initiative has is, frankly, quite transformative. It will be the largest land and freshwater conservation initiative that TNC has ever been engaged in across our 75-year history,” Ryan Demmy Bidwell, global director of PFP at TNC, told our reporter Thomas Cox. 🌄 The federal government recently announced plans to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Advocacy from Indigenous community leaders, community activists, and environmentalists across Southern California led to this landmark decision to preserve public land and provide critical open space and equitable access to nature. 🚵♀️Expanding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument will promote equitable access to nature, safeguard a vital water source for Los Angeles County, tackle climate and biodiversity challenges, support national 30x30 goals, and honor the landscape’s culture and historical significance. 🙌 Alongside the Monument’s expansion, over $1 million in corporate, philanthropic, and state government support to ensure equitable access and recreation within the Monument was announced, a commitment that includes support from EGA member, Resources Legacy Fund. Grant opportunity: Landcare Grants Open now; Closes 30/04/24; up to $20,000; Vic These grants support landcare and environmental volunteer groups and networks with on-ground works, education and capacity building projects that protect and restore our land and natural environment. There are two streams: -Project Grants of up to $20,000 for on-ground works, capability building activities, community education and engagement that protects or improves our natural environment such as native vegetation, native fauna, waterways, wetlands, and soils. -Support Grants of up to $500 to assist with costs such as insurance, incorporation and operational needs, or meetings and events or newsletters, websites and other communication. Eligibility: Grants are open to all Victorian Landcare and environmental volunteer groups and networks that are community-based and have a focus on on-ground land and natural environment improvement work.
