It’s been over a year since Humira—the most financially successful drug in history—lost its U.S. market exclusivity. Enter Humira biosimilars, expected to disrupt the market and lower patient costs. But has that really happened? It’s “happening.” Nine Humira biosimilars have launched, but surprisingly (or maybe not), most aren’t significantly cheaper than Humira itself. Pharmacy benefit managers have mostly embraced biosimilars with high list prices, keeping the savings minimal for patients. However, major PBMs like Express Scripts are taking brand name Humira off their top-tier formularies in exchange for Humira biosimilars. But it’s not happening fast enough. So, why the slow uptake? Several factors are at play: 1️⃣ PBMs’ preference for high-priced drugs 2️⃣ the limited availability of interchangeable biosimilars 3️⃣ the reluctance of both physicians and patients to switch from a familiar treatment. This is a marathon, not a sprint. In the EU, it took years for biosimilars to make a dent in Humira’s market share. The U.S. may follow a similar path, but significant shifts will require more awareness, education, and strategic changes in the drug supply chain. Curious about the full story?
