The major VC fund Menlo Ventures ($5 billion in assets under management) and Anthropic (creator of leading AI models) have announced the launch of the Anthology Fund. This new $100 million fund is aimed at investing in AI startups. This powerful partnership combines Menlo's expertise in building companies with Anthropic's cutting-edge AI technologies. 🤖 Why Anthology? The name reflects not only the connection to Anthropic but also the shared vision: to create a collection of innovative AI startups that together form something extraordinary. The fund offers unique advantages to startups: 1️⃣ Access to Anthropic Models: The opportunity to use the most powerful AI models (currently Claude 3.5 Sonnet), including $25,000 in free credits. 2️⃣ Menlo Ventures Expertise: Support from experienced investors and an extensive network of contacts for scaling the business. 3️⃣ Community and Program: Regular events with the Menlo and Anthropic teams, including demo days with top executives from both companies. 4️⃣ Additional Resources: Credits/loans from Menlo partners and access to workspace in the fund’s offices. Anthology Fund focuses on five key areas where entrepreneurs are innovating with Anthropic's AI models: - AI infrastructure for developers, - New applications of AI in niche verticals (biotech, healthcare, cloud, cybersecurity), - Integration of LLM for B2C, - Tools for enhancing AI safety, - AI applications for societal benefit (education). Seattle's startup scene is growing, but it’s clear we have some work to do. That was a main takeaway from our panel discussion last week featuring venture capitalists from top-tier firms including Brentt Baltimore of Greycroft, Victoria Treyger of Felicis, and Sunil Nagaraj of Ubiquity Ventures, moderated by Kirby Winfield. Their goal: analyze Seattle's startup landscape from an outsider’s perspective with active Seattle investments. They see a city rich in technical talent but with several missing pieces. Go-to-market strategies often lag behind technical capabilities; capital is available, but frequently from outside the region; and stronger community cohesion is needed to bridge incumbent tech leaders with founder types. In the past year at sequel we have sourced 10,000 startups, looked at 1,354 in detail and made 11 investments, currently at a rate of >2 per month, all with an investment team of 1. How did we do this? Senna - our proprietary data-driven sourcing, enrichment and decision engine. The key features of Senna include: - A custom CRM that centralizes all founder and fund communications including emails, calendar events, and call transcripts. - Automated data enrichment and machine-learning algorithms that score startups, founders, and lead investors. - Cold outreach tools enabling two-click emails and follow-ups with a 28% conversion rate to founder calls. - A smart data room manager that organizes files, extracts data from pitch decks, and generates video scripts. Senna significantly increases the velocity of our investment sourcing and the quality of our decisions. For most VC firms investing in 20-30 startups per year alongside tier 1 investors at series A would require an investment team of 10+ people. We're able to do the same work with a team of 1, and we believe to a higher level of quality. It is still too early to judge our investment performance but the early signals are promising. We have managed to source early and secure allocations in highly competitive rounds alongside Tier 1 funds including Bessemer Venture Partners, Early Bird, Seedcamp and Box Group. Our investments are growing at an annualised rate >7x (which puts them in the top 1% of startups at Series A stage) and we've had 1 mark-up from a tier 1 fund. Senna also helps us add value for portfolio company companies - with our Senna for founders products we provide an easy way for our portfolio companies to access an investor network of 246 funds for warm introductions. Looking ahead, our Senna roadmap includes: - Finalizing automated deal scorecards for Seed, Series A, and Series B+ stages, while ensuring that AI-generated insights remain easily verifiable. - Automating evaluation of data extraction from pitch decks, financial models, and calls. - Adding more Intelligence Layers such as athlete relevance scoring, market trend analysis, and competitor intelligence to enrich data insights. - Expanding portfolio support with tools for hiring, business development, competitor analysis, and fundraising strategies. We continue to invest in our engineering and data-science teams.
