Since October last year, I've had the pleasure of writing a weekly social media post for work. These posts spotlight different JMA Collection objects and provide me with a great opportunity to further explore our collection. I get to peruse our collection, (which you can too, via our website!), pick an item- whatever it may be- do some research, and write about it. The festival of Tu B'Shvat took place last Thursday and the post I wrote is shared below. Not pictured, is my frustration during the writing process! Did you know that the vast majority of the JMA's audience and visitors are not Jewish? Some Jewish holidays, beliefs and traditions are easy to explain to a non-Jewish audience, but Tu B'Shvat is not. Its origins & meaning lie in the Torah, ancient land practices, Talmudic rabbinical interpretation and Temple history. In writing this post, I learned that sometimes you just have to write around the issue, rather than solve it, and I decided to leave the origins of the festival out. However, I definitely wanted to include the point about "Jewish dynamism", something that is not often talked about, even by Jews. The Jewish culture & people are well-known for our ancient origins and strong commitment to a Jewish future, and most people believe that this is due to our firm grasp on our traditions. While not untrue, I believe that a core factor of our survival is our dynamism- our ability to adapt and respond to changes & challenges. Tu B'Shvat is one example, but the most significant by far would be the implementation of rabbinic Judaism after the fall of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Also cut for brevity was all the information surrounding the Dunera ship, Tatura Internment Camp and the Jewish community in Shepparton. Yes, there used to be significant Jewish community in Shepparton, the majority of whom worked in agriculture. I would recommend spending some time researching these significant moments & events in Victorian Jewish history, including exploring them at the JMA. St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, in collaboration with Americans for the Arts and Creative Pinellas shared that St. Petersburg’s nonprofit arts industry generated $132,530,557 in economic activity in 2022, according to the newly released Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), an economic and social impact study. This economic activity is comprised of $61,607,918 in spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $70,922,639 in event-related spending by their audiences supported 2,121 jobs and generated $26,529,721 in local, state, and federal government revenue. Imagine what we can do with art investors, at every level - government, business and individual philanthropy. All in, all for the greater good.
