Textured vegetable protein was invented by the agricultural commodities and food processing company Archer Daniels Midland in the 1960s; the company owns the name "textured vegetable protein" and the acronym TVP as registered trademarks. Archer Daniels Midland had developed a textured soy protein isolate made with an extruder in the shape of rods or tubes. The soy protein isolate was produced in a small pilot plant and sold for use in chili powder, but the product was not commercially successful. By 1968, TVP was widely used in a variety of food products, and consumption skyrocketed after 1971, when TVP was approved for use in school lunch programs. By 1980, similar products were being produced by rival companies in America, but Archer Daniels Midland remained the leader in TVP production. ML-based Rapid Quality Prediction for Wheat Flour 🍞 Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a key cereal crop, widely grown worldwide due to its vital role in diets and protein supply. Obtaining premium quality flour involves cleaning and conditioning wheat, followed by multiple milling steps with varied rollers, sieving, and purification. Roller mills are pivotal in wheat flour production for the baking industry. Flour quality entails: 🧧 Chemical aspects (moisture, protein, ash, wet gluten) 🧧 Technological aspects (sedimentation, falling number, rheological traits). Traditional vs. latest non-destructive techniques: 📢 Traditional methods, slower and destructive, assess cereal-based food safety; however, newer nondestructive techniques are more efficient and suitable for real-time monitoring and detection. A Novel Approach to Evaluating Wheat Flour Quality: 📈 The ability of Near Infrared Reflectance spectroscopy (NIR) to rapidly predict the quality of wheat flour using the supervised Machine Learning technique of Regression Trees is evaluated using a novel method. The proposed method guarantees rapid estimation and accurately anticipates wheat flour's quality characteristics, generating decision rules with satisfactory precision. ▶ Choice of carrier(s) for premix (part 1) The selection and incorporation rate of the carrier(s) is an important aspect of the formulation. Key features: ✔ It should neutralize the electrostatic charges present in certain ingredients. ✔ Chemically inert ✔ Primarily have the density, particle shape and particle size compatible with other micro ingredients so as to prevent any demixing in the premix. ✔ Water sequester from other raw materials thereby reducing water activity and improve stability of the premix. ✔ Impart good flowability. ☑ Two kinds of carriers: ✔ Inorganic carriers: such as limestone (calcium carbonate), dicalcium phosphate, Monocalcium phosphate, Zeolite, Fine dried salt ✔ Organic carriers: such as vegetable (wheat middlings, Wheat feed flour, Corn meal, Soybean meal, etc) or sometimes animal origin (e.g. lactose, whey, etc) ❓ Physical characteristics ✅ Particle size: The particle size profile of the carrier encompasses that of the other component to be mixed ✅ Particle density: In practice, it is accepted that it is possible to obtain a stable Mixture when the ratio of density of the two components (carrier/component) is between 1 and 3 ✅ Flowability: angle of repose testing. When I first heard the term 'press cake' four years ago, I thought of flat muffins. I wasn't entirely wrong. However, flat muffins probably taste better than what remains after extracting oil from seeds or nuts. As I continue to explore ways to minimize waste and maximize resources, press cake stands out as valuable. The remaining press cake contains a mixture of residual oil, proteins, fibers, and other components. The simplest application and use I've observed is distributing it to local farmers who use it as animal feed. Depending on the source material - whether it's soybeans, sunflower seeds, or palm nuts - our partners transform this byproduct into new applications. But how ❓ Press cake is typically dried to reduce moisture content, which is important for its storage stability and various applications. Food or feed industry - the press cake may undergo further processing to isolate proteins. Key words: solvent extraction, precipitation, and filtration to obtain a protein-rich fraction. In some cases, press cake may be ground or subjected to size reduction processes to achieve a desired particle size. This is common when using press cake as a feedstock for further applications. For animal feed, it can be pelletized to improve handling, transportation, and feeding efficiency. In advanced biorefinery processes, press cake can be subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis or fermentation to extract additional valuable compounds or convert it into bio-based products. Some press cakes may contain bioactive compounds that are interesting for the pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries.Technologies: fluid extraction or other extraction methods to isolate and concentrate these compounds.
