Message for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples As Indigenous peoples, we are the keepers of vibrant cultures, captivating traditions, and rich, colourful histories. As Crees, we have worked hard to maintain a strong connection with our culture and remain protectors and stewards of Eeyou Istchee. This year, the United Nations has declared the theme as ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact.” It is evident that colonization has had a deep impact on Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous cultures and languages are vulnerable—not only here in Eeyou Istchee but across the globe. Our Indigenous brothers and sisters around the world face similar challenges in preserving their identities in a rapidly changing world. We can be proud of how we have maintained strong ties to our history, language, and culture. As Indigenous peoples, we share common barriers and difficulties. It is crucial that we stand strong together, supporting one another, alongside allies who advocate loudly for our rights as distinct peoples.

Today, we celebrate World Indigenous Day, a time to honor the rich cultures, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous peoples across the globe. This day reminds us of the invaluable contributions Indigenous communities have made to our world, from their deep connection to nature and sustainable living practices to their diverse languages, arts, and traditions. There are several diverse indigenous groups that have faced significant challenges but have continued to preserve their language and cultural heritage and share their traditions. For example, Australia’s Indigenous peoples are two distinct cultural groups made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which are further divided into hundreds of groups, such as the Arrernte in central Australia and Bininj in Western Arnhem Land. Each group has its own unique language, history, cultural traditions, customs, and laws. These few examples don’t even begin to cover the abundance of indigenous groups all over the world, each with their own unique story to tell. #WorldIndigenousDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CulturalHeritage #StandWithIndigenousPeoples
