The overall aim is to provide the right conditions for start-ups to scale-up, to support #innovation and to allow innovative business to access investment in order to provide economic growth. Some comment on Jokowi's 'transitional' appointments just 90 days before the end of his presidency, and how Prabowo may approach selecting his cabinet. I suggest its likely to be not dissimilar to Jokowi, with plenty of rewards for political loyalists and incentives for coalition partners plus lucrative opportunities for his extended family. We may see some technocrats & professionals in key portfolios critical for delivering his populist election-promise policies. Was Paita naïve and ignorant? Was Paita naïve and ignorant when he and his colleagues made the move over the weekend? Certainly not, the move was sophisticated with huge political complexities. It was not done without considering the associated risks. The move was not done without knowledge about the political implications and effects. Papua New Guinea must remember that, it was Paita that led Pangu Pati members from Level 10, MRDC Haus to Laguna and made James Marape Prime Minister in 2019. Fast forward to 2024, we see Paita playing the same cards, knowing that he and his men will not settle in the opposition. To think and say that Paita is inexperience will undermine what he has done in 2019 which has benefited many in the government today including Marape himself. PNG must stop and ask, “what was the move about?” “What are the alternatives?” “Their costs and benefits?” “Why did the others, especially those with ministerial portfolios follow Paita across sacrificing their ministerial perks and privileges?” Paita’s move in 2019 and 2024 speaks the language of strategy, it has a historical context, purposefully connecting the ways and means to an end. The move has structure and workings of the whole. It has a bridging function and political instrumentality to benefit Pangu and all coalition partners like what he did in 2019. We say PNG politics is fluid, and rightfully so, because politics belongs to a large body of human relations and actions, making such moves by Paita a sub-set of our politics. Today, is not the end of tomorrow and the move is not the end of relations, because both processes are constantly altered. Let us all rest and allow tomorrow to take care of itself, because we do not know what tomorrow holds, but we trust our short history to give us hope.
